Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) – New Hire Sign‐On and Retention Incentives
Job Responsibilities
Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances.
Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.

Recruitment Incentive (up to $15,000 per year for a three‐year service contract) available in:

Annual Base Salary for newly appointed CBPOs:
GS‐5 and GS‐7: $41,863 – $112,415 per year
Locality pay varies by duty location.
A fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to the starting salary.
Promotion to the next higher grade level is possible after 52 weeks at each level.
Qualifications
GS‐5
Experience: Minimum of three years full‐time general work experience that demonstrates the ability to meet and deal with people and to learn and apply a body of facts.
Education substitution: A bachelor's degree or completion of a four‐year course of study in any field leading to one.
Combination of experience and education: Combination of successfully completed college education and general work experience.
GS‐7
Experience: Minimum of one year specialized full‐time work experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, including physical inspections, observing and evaluating facts, reviewing documentation, and making determinations.
Education substitution: A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement (class standing, GPA ≥ 3.0, or honor society membership) or one full year of graduate‐level education.
Combination: Combination of specialized experience and graduate‐level education.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS‐9 grade level.

Other Requirements
U.S. citizenship.
Primary U.S. residency for at least three years within the last five years.
Must be under 40 years old or exempt under specific veteran or law‐enforcement rules.
Veterans' preference may apply under excepted service.
