About the Role
Walmart's Me@Walmart is the mobile experience that puts the power of Walmart in every associate's hands — 2M+ associates globally, across every store, DC, and market. As the Principal Engineer for Me@Walmart Global Platform (International), you'll be the senior technical anchor responsible for how our International markets (Mexico, Canada, Chile, Central America) consume, adapt, and extend the Me@Walmart Global Platform.
This isn't a role that ships features. This is the role that ensures features can be shipped — on time, at scale, across languages, currencies, and regulatory realities — without every market team reinventing the wheel. You'll own the technical direction for how Me@Walmart lands in every International market, feed our market-specific requirements back into the Global Platform, and coach the Staff engineers who execute the day-to-day delivery
What You'll Do
Own the technical direction for Me@Walmart Global Platform (International)
- Author and evolve the Me@Walmart International Platform strategy — a multi-quarter technical roadmap covering integration surface, extension points, multi-market rollout patterns, and the standard operating model for market teams to consume the General Platform.
- Represent International Tech in US Me@Walmart Global Platform forums — ensuring our market realities (LGPD, LFPDPPP, local payment methods, language, currency, offline-first store use cases) are reflected upstream, not bolted on downstream.
- Chair the International Me@Walmart Design Review (bi-weekly, cross-market) and set the ADR / RFC standard the org will operate by.
Drive cross-market platform adoption and parity
- Define and publish an International Parity Matrix — the objective view of how each market compares to the US Me@Walmart baseline (features shipped, platform versions consumed, technical debt outstanding, gaps prioritized).
- Partner with each market's Engineering Manager and Staff engineers on market-specific rollout plans for Global Platform capabilities.
- Own the mini-app / plug-in extension model for International, including the table.loop registry governance, semver policy, and deprecation lifecycle.
Elevate the engineering practice around you
- Coach and calibrate Staff-tier engineers across MX (Firebase INTL, MAGIC frameworks, Polaris WFM Interfaces, Store Systems). Named coaching relationships, not drive-by mentorship.
- Author public engineering artifacts — ADRs, RFCs, internal blog posts, tech talks — that document how we make platform decisions at International Tech.
- Serve as calibration and promotion signal for Sr Staff and Staff SWE promo cycles.
Own International Me@Walmart reliability & operational excellence
- Be the named escalation owner for Me@Walmart platform-integration incidents affecting multiple markets.
- Publish a quarterly root-cause taxonomy and drive structural fixes that remove classes of incidents, not just individual firefights.
- Reduce Me@Walmart International P1 / P2 incidents attributable to the integration surface by 30% year over year.
What You'll Bring Required
- 9+ years total software engineering experience, with at least 3 years at Staff, Principal, or Distinguished level.
- Built or owned a mobile platform SDK consumed by 5+ downstream app teams (e.g. Uber Base, Airbnb DLS, Meta React Native infra, Grab Kit, in-house super-app platforms.
- Deep hands-on with both native mobile (Kotlin / Jetpack Compose, Swift / SwiftUI) and cross-platform (React Native or Flutter). This role reads code across all three.
- Led a multi-market or multi-tenant rollout of a global product to at least 3 markets / tenants with different regulatory, language, or payment realities.
- Portfolio of authored engineering artifacts — ADRs, RFCs, blog posts, conference talks, patents, or open-source maintainership. If you can't produce at least one written design doc from the last 24 months, this role isn't a fit. Track record of coaching Staff engineers to promotion — ideally named on 2+ promo packets as an endorser or coaching sponsor.
- Written and verbal fluency in English; conversational Spanish is a strong plus (audience in MX is bilingual.
- Comfort with MX Central hours + occasional early-morning overlap with US Bentonville.
Strongly Preferred
- Prior work in retail, fintech, or super-app environments where the mobile app is the product (not a companion experience).
- Experience with mini-app / plug-in architectures (WeChat, Alipay, Line, Grab, or in house equivalents.
- Hands-on with Firebase (Remote Config, A/B, Crashlytics, App Distribution, FCM) at scale.
- Comfort with observability & performance engineering (Datadog RUM / mobile SDK, custom telemetry, distributed tracing across mobile → BFF → service, perf budgets.
- Familiarity with Walmart's stack — WCNP / Concord / KITT, DCS-W (Data Credential Service), GTP-BOM compliance, Kafka on Walmart platform, MAGIC framework, GEC GitHub + Sonar gates. (If not, you'll ramp fast — but familiarity accelerates Year 1 impact.
- Public engineering identity: conference speaking (Droidcon, RN Conf, WWDC labs), OSS maintainership, or a technical blog with a real readership.
