General Manager
This position reports to the Managing Partner. The following employees report directly to the General Manager: Loader Operator.
Requirements
Education
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Horticulture, or a related field.
- Preferred: MBA in a related discipline.
Licensing / Registration / Certification
- Required: Valid Texas Driver's License, Clean Motor Vehicle Record.
- Preferred: Forklift or heavy equipment certification; CDL license a plus.
Experience
- Required: Experience managing or working in a landscaping materials yard, construction yard, or similar supply environment.
- Experience working with external tax accountants and regulatory reporting.
- Preferred: Prior supervisory experience with inventory, logistics, or multi-yard operations.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to develop, document, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and inventory software.
- Strong customer service orientation and problem-solving mindset.
- Bilingual (English–Spanish) strongly preferred.
Physical
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to operate forklifts or yard equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Climate: Both indoor office/store and outdoor yard environments, subject to seasonal weather conditions.
- Travel: Minimal; primarily local vendor or site visits.
- Hours: Standard yard hours with flexibility to work weekends or extended hours during peak landscaping seasons.
Essential Functions
- The General Manager’s primary function is to oversee daily yard operations and develop systems that support scalability. Core responsibilities include:
- Oversee all daily yard operations, including inventory management, materials handling, truck loading/unloading,
and customer service.
- Manage and train yard staff, ensuring safe and efficient work practices.
- Monitor equipment use and maintenance schedules.
- Create and document SOPs for all aspects of yard operations.
- Identify inefficiencies and propose scalable, repeatable solutions.
- Work closely with ownership to design operational systems that support franchising and future expansion.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional yard environment that reflects the company brand.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and training new employees.
Authorities & Responsibilities
- The General Manager is authorized to:
- Supervise and discipline yard and store staff.
- Approve operational expenses and material orders within budgetary limits.
- Develop and implement SOPs and safety protocols.
- Directly address customer issues and implement service recovery measures.
- Recommend staffing, equipment, and process improvements to ownership.
- Perform other authorities and responsibilities as assigned by the Managing Partner.
- Review and authorize Sales Representative’s CC Expenses up to $250.
- Review and approve Sales Representative’s Car Allowance.
DUTIES & TASKS
- Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lead daily yard operations, ensuring safe and efficient practices.
- Manage inventory levels and order replenishments as needed.
- Train and evaluate staff performance; enforce safety standards.
- Develop SOPs for processes, including receiving, handling,
customer transactions, and equipment use.
- Coordinate truck loading/unloading and delivery schedules.
- Maintain accurate records of materials, customer sales, and operational reports.
- Conduct inspections of equipment and facilities, scheduling maintenance as required.
- Participate in business planning sessions with ownership to align operational goals with growth strategy.
- Other duties and tasks may be assigned by the Managing Partner.
MEASUREMENTS OF PERFORMANCE
The General Manager shall perform in an acceptable manner when the following objectives have been accomplished:
- Employee Evaluation Score as per the Employee Evaluation Procedure.
- KPIs for this position are:
- Sales Growth: a. To measure: effectiveness in increasing store and yard sales over prior periods b. Formula: ((Current Month Sales ÷ Same Month Last Year Sales – 1) ×100) c. Goal: ≥10% year-over-year growth d. Source: POS/Accounting System e. Weight: 30%
- Inventory Accuracy: a. To measure: accuracy of inventory counts vs. system records b. Formula: (Accurate Items ÷ Total Items Counted) × 100 c. Goal: 95% accuracy d. Source: Physical Inventory vs. System Records e. Weight: 20%
- Customer Satisfaction / Service Quality: a. To measure: How well customer expectations are met in service, timeliness, and professionalism b. Formula: (Positive Surveys + Repeat Business) ÷ Total Customers × 100 c. Goal: 90%+ satisfaction rating d. Source: Customer Surveys, Repeat Purchase Records e. Weight: 20%
- Safety Compliance: a. To measure: adherence to safety standards and incident prevention b. Formula: (Number of Safety Incidents ÷ Total Hours Worked) × 1000 c. Goal: 0 recordable incidents; maintain incident rate below industry average d. Source: Safety Logs/OSHA Reports e. Weight: 15%
