Function: Drilling Well Engineering
Experience: 7 years
Role Type: Managed Services
Role Summary The Well Planner Trajectory Designer will be responsible for designing and maintaining directional and horizontal well trajectories, performing anti-collision analysis, managing survey requirements, and supporting high-volume well planning activities. The role requires strong expertise in wellbore positioning, trajectory optimization, survey QA/QC, and drillability assessment, while working closely with Drilling Engineering, Subsurface, Survey, and Directional Drilling teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design horizontal and directional well trajectories, including build-and-hold, S-curve, modified-S, and catenary profiles.
- Calculate and optimize build/drop/turn rates, dogleg severity, landing geometry, and lateral placement.
- Perform anti-collision analysis using ISCWSA error models, Separation Factor (SF), Ellipse of Uncertainty (EOU), and closest-approach assessments.
- Develop survey programs and perform survey QA/QC, including Multi-Station Analysis (MSA).
- Evaluate requirements for geomagnetic corrections and gyroscopic surveys.
- Update trajectories based on geological target changes, drilling constraints, and anti-collision risks.
- Support trajectory drillability assessment using torque, drag, hydraulics, casing wear, and BHA considerations.
- Maintain validated definitive surveys and offset-well information.
- Prepare trajectory, survey, anti-collision, and engineering handover packages.
- Manage multiple concurrent well plans in multi-well pad, high-volume drilling environments.
- Maintain plan version control and engineering documentation.
Technical Skills Tools
- Landmark COMPASS or equivalent well planning anti-collision software.
- KM ERA or equivalent well engineering tools.
- Landmark WellPlan or equivalent torque, drag, hydraulics applications.
- Strong knowledge of ISCWSA error models and wellbore positioning.
- Understanding of Minimum Curvature Method, DLS, Separation Factor, EOU, MWD surveys, gyro surveys, and survey uncertainty.
- Excel, Power BI, Spotfire, and document-management tools.
- Python/VBA automation experience is an advantage.
Qualifications Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum, Mechanical, Geosciences, or a related technical discipline.
- 7 years of experience in well planning, trajectory design, directional drilling, or wellbore positioning.
- Hands-on experience designing horizontal and directional wells.
- Experience with anti-collision analysis and survey management.
- Experience supporting multi-well pad or high-volume drilling programs preferred.
- Field exposure to directional drilling, MWD/LWD, BHA behavior, and survey operations is desirable.
- Strong analytical, technical documentation, and communication skills.
- Key Competencies
- Trajectory Design, Wellbore Positioning, Anti-Collision, Survey QA/QC, Directional Drilling, Torque & Drag, Drill ability Assessment, Multi-Well Planning, Technical Documentation.
