We are looking for a web designer first and a web developer second. You will design the public website for an online tax-filing product, starting with the homepage and static pages, and then build what you design.
Filing taxes makes people anxious, so the site must feel calm, patient and helpful. We want someone who will challenge decisions on layout, messaging and page content, and explain why a different choice would work better.
You will build the pages in React and TypeScript, following the technical specification, and set them up in the CMS. You will work closely with Marketing and the product engineering team.
What success looks like
- Design: homepage and static pages designed, reviewed and approved
- SEO and AEO: every page has metadata, a clear heading structure and structured data
- Core Web Vitals: LCP ≤ 2.5 s, INP ≤ 200 ms, CLS ≤ 0.1 (mobile, p75)
- Lighthouse ≥ 90 on every template, in all four categories
- Accessibility: WCAG 2.2 AA, with manual keyboard and screen-reader checks
- CMS: Marketing updates page content without a developer
Key Responsibilities
- Design (primary): Design the homepage and static pages end to end: user flows, wireframes, visual design and responsive layouts.
- Design (primary): Own UI and UX decisions, and back each one with clear reasoning, research or data.
- Design (primary): Review and challenge page structure, messaging and content, and propose better copy where needed.
- Design (primary): Plan SEO for every page: site structure, headings, metadata,
internal links and page speed.
- Design (primary): Plan AEO (answer engine optimization) so AI assistants and search features can find and quote the site's answers, using clear question-and-answer content, FAQ sections and structured data.
- Design (primary): Keep the design system consistent across pages: colors, typography, spacing and components.
- Development (secondary): Build the pages in React, TypeScript and Next.js, following the technical specification.
- Development (secondary): Set up pages and reusable content blocks in the CMS so Marketing can update them without a developer.
- Development (secondary): Make every page accessible, responsive and fast on mobile.
Requirements
- 5+ years designing websites, with a portfolio of live marketing websites or landing pages you designed.
- Strong UI and UX skills, and fluency in Figma.
- Proven SEO experience, plus a working understanding of AEO and structured data (schema.org).
- Confidence to question decisions and content, and to explain the reasoning behind your recommendations.
- Hands-on experience with React and TypeScript; Next.js preferred.
- Very comfortable working in a headless CMS (Payload, Strapi, Sanity, Contentful or similar).
- Solid HTML, CSS and Tailwind CSS for responsive layouts.
- Accessibility knowledge (WCAG 2.2 AA).
- Clear communication with marketers, designers and engineers.
- C1 English level or higher.
