Kimpton MAS OLAS Resort u0026
Baja California Sur
About Mas OlasKimpton Mas Olas is a 103-room, adults-only resort on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, one hour from Los Cabos. It sits among nine gardens planted by hand across thirty acres over three decades, on two miles of quiet beach. Three open-air restaurants (Centro, Botánica and Kahal) cook from our own farms and gardens, and weddings, retreats and corporate events all use the grounds as their setting.
The site is demanding horticulturally: an arid climate, salt-laden ocean wind, sandy soils, scarce and costly water, and a late-summer hurricane season. The landscape has to read as an oasis to guests while being built and run for those conditions.
The RoleThe Landscape & Grounds Manager owns every living and exterior surface guests see at Mas Olas: guest-room pots and terraces, building and restaurant plantings, gardens, lawns, palms, irrigation, the on-site vivero, two off-campus lots, pathways and event sites. With Chef Sandro Falbo, the role also runs the resort's three on-site farms. It reports directly to the General Manager and sits on the Mas Olas Executive Team.
This is a hands-on leadership role. We are looking for someone who keeps a desert-coastal property looking lush without wasting water, has every ceremony site photo-ready on wedding days, and builds a grounds team that works to Mas Olas standards. Direct reports include gardeners, an irrigation technician, nursery staff and grounds attendants.
Key ResponsibilitiesGrounds Standards & Daily Operations• Maintain all gardens, lawns, palms, planters, pathways and arrival areas to a written Mas Olas standard, with daily, weekly and seasonal task schedules.
- Walk the property daily with an eye for what a guest sees first: arrival, pool decks, restaurant terraces, villa exteriors and sightlines to the ocean.
- Schedule noisy or visible work (mowing, blowing, pruning, spraying) around guest hours and quiet zones.
- Keep exterior hardscape, outdoor furniture zones, lighting fixtures in planted areas, and beach access paths clean and safe, coordinating with Engineering where responsibilities meet.
Rooms, Buildings & Restaurants• Care for all in-room potted plants: selection for low light and air conditioning, watering, cleaning, rotation and replacement, scheduled with Housekeeping around guest stays.
- Maintain room and villa terrace landscaping, including planters, privacy screening and plunge-pool surrounds, without entering occupied rooms outside agreed windows.
- Maintain plantings on and around buildings: entries, courtyards, walls,
rooftops, lobby, spa and public-area interiors.
- Maintain landscaping at the open-air restaurants Centro, Botánica and Kahal, scheduled around service hours and coordinated with each restaurant's manager.
- Keep a plant inventory by room and outlet so replacements are planned, not reactive.
Water & Irrigation• Own the irrigation system end to end: zoning, scheduling, controllers, leak detection, repairs and seasonal adjustments.
- Track water use by zone monthly and set reduction targets with the GM; report results.
- Favor drought- and salt-tolerant plantings, mulching and drip over spray wherever the guest experience allows.
- Manage water quality issues affecting plants (salinity, treated or reclaimed water) with Engineering.
Horticulture, Plant Health & Vivero• Select, source and install plants suited to coastal Baja conditions, with preference for native and regionally adapted species.
- Manage the on-site vivero (nursery): propagation, growing-on, hardening off and stock levels for replacements, in-room pots, seasonal color, event décor and farm seedlings.
- Run integrated pest management for exterior areas, using the least-toxic effective controls and keeping all application records required under Mexican regulations.
- Manage palm care, tree health, pruning and removal, including hurricane-risk assessment of trees near buildings and guest areas.
Events & Weddings• Prepare ceremony and reception sites to an agreed spec and timeline for every wedding, retreat and corporate event.
- Attend weekly event meetings with Sales and Banquets; sign off site readiness before each event.
- Restore lawns and planted areas after events and track recovery time so the events calendar does not outrun the grounds.
Resort Farms• Manage the resort's three on-site farms in partnership with Chef Sandro Falbo: soil fertility, irrigation, planting, cultivation, harvest and crop rotation.
- Build a seasonal planting and harvest calendar with Chef Sandro so production matches menu needs across Centro, Botánica, Kahal, in-room dining and banquets.
- Track yield by crop and by farm,
and report monthly what the farms supply against produce the kitchens still buy.
- Apply food-safety practices from field to kitchen, including irrigation water quality, approved inputs and harvest handling; favor organic and low-input methods.
- Keep farm areas guest-ready where they are part of tours or garden experiences, coordinating with the Director of Wellness, who owns those experiences.
Off-Campus Lots• Manage the two additional lots outside the main campus: planting, irrigation, maintenance, security of equipment and materials, and staff scheduling and transport between sites.
- Plan how each lot is used and report on its condition and costs to the GM.
Storm & Environmental Readiness• Own the grounds portion of the hurricane plan: pre-storm securing, tree and debris risk, post-storm cleanup and replanting.
- Ensure grounds practices comply with applicable federal, state and municipal environmental, water-use and coastal-zone requirements.
People Leadership, Budget & Vendors• Lead hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation, discipline and termination of grounds staff, working with Human Resources to ensure compliance with the Ley Federal del Trabajo and the resort's internal work rules and policies.
- Build a training program covering standards, safe equipment use, chemical handling and guest interaction.
- Build and manage the annual operating and capital budget for grounds, plants, irrigation and equipment.
- Manage contractors and suppliers (tree work, irrigation, pest control, nurseries), including bids, contracts and quality checks.
- Maintain the equipment fleet and a preventive maintenance schedule.
Success Measures — First 12 Months• Grounds standards audit score on a written walk-through checklist (monthly).
- Grounds and garden mentions in guest reviews and surveys (monthly).
- Events signed off on time, with no planner complaints (per event).
- Water use by zone against baseline and target (monthly).
- Grounds spend against operating and capital budget (monthly).
- Farm supply against produce the kitchens still buy (monthly).
- Plant loss as a share of installed stock (quarterly).
- Team turnover, training completion and safety incidents (quarterly).
First 30 days: Audit the full property and irrigation system, establish water and standards baselines, deliver a written 12-month grounds plan and budget, and agree a grounds-readiness checklist with Event Sales. Targets for each measure are set with the GM once baselines exist.
