About Howard Financial
Howard Financial is a tech-forward outsourced accounting and finance firm serving clients across Vacation Rental, Hospitality, Consumer & E-Commerce, and Development & Real Estate. We combine strong technical accounting with modern tools to give our clients clarity and confidence in their numbers.
About the Role
We’re looking for a Sales Tax Manager to own quality and delivery across sales, occupancy, and lodging tax for a portfolio of U.S.-based clients. You’ll lead a small team, review their work, own the deadline calendar, and serve as the day-to-day point of contact for clients. You’ll report to our VP of Tax, a U.S. CPA, who handles advisory, pricing, and senior relationships, so you can focus on running a tight, accurate, on-time sales tax practice.
What You’ll Do
- Review filings prepared by the team, along with every client’s monthly sales tax rollforward and proof
- Own written client communication using firm templates (data requests, approvals, proof differences, and notice responses) and lead client calls after your ramp-up
- Own the sales tax deadline calendar and book of work, with zero missed filings
- Gather client data (POS/PMS exports), chase what’s missing, and keep our tax platform current so weekly client recaps are always accurate
- Plan the team’s week, set time estimates for each task, and make sure no one is overloaded
- Track time and margin by client, run a monthly scope and billing check, and flag clients for repricing or out-of-scope work
- Confirm client registrations are in place before first filings, and manage notice responses and abatement requests
- Write and maintain sales tax SOPs and the new-client onboarding checklist
- Flag upstream accounting issues to the industry VPs
What You Bring
- 5+ years in indirect tax compliance, including at least 2 years in U.S. sales and use or lodging tax (VAT/GST and outsourcing or shared-service experience count toward the total)
- 2+ years reviewing others’ work
- Solid knowledge of short-term rental and lodging taxes across state, county, city, and district levels, including marketplace facilitator rules
- Experience with post-Wayfair economic nexus and multi-state registrations
- Experience reconciling POS/PMS reports (Guesty, Cloudbeds, or similar) to the GL
- Working knowledge of a property management system, with the ability to become proficient in Guesty within your first 4 weeks (tax setup, channel tax sync for Airbnb, Booking.com and Vrbo, tax ledger, remittance reports, and how trust accounting affects tax payable)
- Professional, client-ready written English (tested during the process) and spoken English strong enough to lead client calls
Your First 6 Weeks
- Weeks 1–2: Learning only. You’ll complete the Howard Academy, covering our SOPs, tax platform, and Guesty, with no client work.
- Weeks 3–4: Start reviewing filings with the VP of Tax as second reviewer,
own written client communication, and run the Monday scheduling meeting.
- Weeks 5–6: Lead client calls and take full ownership of the sales tax book.
Backgrounds That Fit
Indirect tax professionals from U.S. vacation rental or hospitality operators, U.S.-focused outsourcing firms, or multinational shared-service centers who have handled U.S. sales, use, or lodging tax and are ready for direct client ownership.
Is Howard Right for You?
Howard isn’t for everyone, and that’s intentional. We’re a fast-growing startup, which means things move quickly, priorities shift, and not every process is fully built yet. We’re looking for people who:
- Take initiative and act before being asked
- Aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and dig into the details, even when the work isn’t glamorous
- See ambiguity as an opportunity to build, not a reason to wait
- Are hungry to learn, grow, and take on more responsibility over time
If that sounds like you, we’d love to talk.
What We Offer
- Competitive pay, based on experience
- Quarterly performance bonus, tied to team and individual results
- Unlimited paid time off
- 100% remote work, collaborating with a integral team from anywhere
- ️ 10 paid holidays per year, choose local or U.S. holidays
- Annual performance reviews with clear feedback and growth discussions
- Career growth opportunities as the tax function expands
- Learning culture where curiosity, feedback, and continuous improvement are encouraged
- A supportive team of sharp, friendly people who care about great work
