Inviting applications for the role of Backend / API Engineer – Config-as-a-Service and Industrial Data Services Purpose of the role Builds the scalable, multi-tenant services and APIs at the core of the D&A; MIS: a configuration-as-a-service foundation, integration services for MES, Historian and LIMS, and the high-throughput processing that turns real-time and batch plant data into trustworthy KPIs and traceability.

Key responsibilities
• Build platform APIs, exposing both REST and GraphQL interfaces where each fits the consumer (GraphQL for versátil read access, REST for commands and integrations).
• Develop config-as-a-service solutions and manage backend integrations with MES, Historian, LIMS and external systems.
• Design and operate the data stores behind the services: relational, NoSQL and time-series databases, including schema migration, indexing and backup.
• Design and develop scalable backend services and platform APIs using microservices and event-driven patterns.
• Implement the config-as-a-service architecture for platform configuration and orchestration, including versioned configuration, validation, history and tenant scoping.
• Enforce contract-first development: API schemas, request and response validation, versioning and consumer-driven contract tests.
• Build integration services and adapters for MES, Historian, LIMS and external systems, with idempotency, retries, dead-letter handling and reconciliation.
• Map source data to the canonical ISA-95 model in collaboration with the semantic architecture team, without introducing custom schema.
• Expose domain APIs for D&A; MIS use cases: production and downtime, OEE, yield and scrap, quality results, energy intensity, batch genealogy and alarms.
• Develop multi-tenant-aware services with strict data isolation: tenant context propagation, scoped data access, per-tenant quotas and rate limits.
• Optimise for high-throughput industrial data: stream processing, batch pipelines, time-series storage, back-pressure handling and efficient queries.
• Define and meet performance, latency and availability targets with load testing and capacity planning.
• Write maintainable, well-tested code (unit, integration, contract and load tests); participate in design and code reviews.
• Instrument services with logs, metrics and traces; support production operations and root-cause analysis.
• Collaborate with AI/ML, frontend, overlay, edge and integration teams; work with security on authentication, authorisation and data protection. Required qualifications and experience Must have
• Strong backend engineering in at least one of Java/Kotlin, Python, Node.js/TypeScript or Go, with microservices and REST API design.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and streaming systems (Kinesis, Kafka, SQS/SNS, EventBridge).
• Experience with AWS services and Kubernetes in production; containerised deployment.
• Contract-first practice: OpenAPI, schema validation, versioning and contract testing.
• Experience designing multi-tenant services with data isolation.
• Practical experience with REST and GraphQL APIs and with database design for transactional and time-series workloads.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience. Good to have
• Industrial integration: OSIsoft/AVEVA PI, Aspen IP.21, GE Proficy, MES and LIMS APIs; OPC-UA.
• Stream and batch processing (Flink, Spark, Glue); time-series stores (Timestream, SiteWise, TimescaleDB, Iceberg on S3).
• KPI and analytics services for manufacturing (OEE, yield, SPC).
• Performance engineering with k6 or Gatling; PostgreSQL tuning. Preferred certifications
• AWS Certified Developer – Associate or Solutions Architect – Associate (preferred).
• Kubernetes application developer certification, CKAD (nice to have). Behavioural competencies
• Ownership and a bias for automation: removes manual steps rather than documenting them.
• Clear written communication: specifications, ADRs and runbooks others can act on without a meeting.
• Comfortable bridging IT and OT: respects plant safety, change windows and operator realities.
• Collaborative across engineering, security, data/AI and plant teams; gives and receives code and design review openly.
• Structured problem solving under ambiguity, with sound trade-off judgement and a habit of recording decisions. Key interfaces
