Position Title: Base Engine Design and Release Engineer (DRE) Work Model: Hybrid Primary
Location:
Mexico City / Toluca Metropolitan Area, Mexico Position Overview The Base Engine Design and Release Engineer leads the end to end design, technical development, integration, validation, and production release of internal combustion base engine components and mechanical assemblies. In this role, you will act as the single point of contact for component ownership, managing parts from early concept phases through prototype builds and full vehicle launch. You will collaborate closely with cross functional teams including Powertrain Architecture, Quality, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Tier 1 suppliers to ensure base engine hardware meets rigorous performance, durability, thermal, NVH, cost, and weight targets. Responsibilities
•
Key Responsibilities
• Technical Design and System Release
• Own component lifetime management for base engine hardware including block, head, cranktrain, valvetrain, covers, and structural sumps.
• Manage and execute Bill of Materials (BOM) creation, engineering changes, and official part releases within corporate Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
• Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T;) principles, perform stack up analyses, and review CAD models using NX or CATIA to ensure full packaging integration.
• Drive technical root cause analyses (using 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone methods) for design or quality issues encountered during engine testing, vehicle builds, or launch.
• Validation and Quality Engineering
• Author, maintain, and execute Design Verification Plans and Reports (DVP&R;) to guarantee hardware meets all functional and structural requirements.
• Develop and maintain Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA)
documents, linking critical characteristics to supplier and manufacturing quality plans.
• Review Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) analysis reports (stress, modal, thermal, and fatigue) to optimize geometries prior to physical tooling.
• Supplier and Cross Functional Collaboration
• Serve as the primary engineering liaison to Tier 1 base engine suppliers, conducting design reviews, tooling updates, and manufacturing feasibility studies (DFM/DFA).
• Support engine assembly plants and vehicle assembly facilities during prototype builds, pilot runs, and launch phases (Job 1).
• Drive Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE) initiatives to achieve targeted weight and cost reductions without compromising reliability or performance. Qualifications
• Required Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 3 years of direct engineering experience as a Design and Release Engineer specifically within base engine commodities or closely related structural engine components.
• Demonstrated hands on experience with automotive product development processes, including APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, and DVP&R; execution.
• Proficiency in automotive PLM/BOM systems and familiarity with CAD viewing/packaging software (NX/Teamcenter or Enovia/CATIA).
• Solid understanding of base engine manufacturing processes such as aluminum casting, precision machining, forging, and gasket sealing technology.
