About the Role
Position Title: Chassis Steering Design and Release Engineer (DRE)
Work Model: Remote (Must reside legally in Mexico)
Primary Location: Mexico (Nationwide)
The Chassis Steering Design and Release Engineer leads the design, technical development, integration, validation, and production release of vehicle steering systems and mechanical components. In this role, you will hold single point component accountability for steering commodities including steering columns, intermediate shafts, electronic power steering (EPS) gear assemblies, tie rods, and mounting hardware managing parts from early architectural concept phases through prototype builds and full vehicle launch. You will collaborate virtually and cross functionally with Chassis Architecture, Vehicle Dynamics, Electrical/Electronics (E/E), Functional Safety (ISO 26262), Quality, Manufacturing, and Tier 1 suppliers to ensure steering hardware meets stringent driver feedback, handling, durability, NVH, functional safety, and cost targets.
Responsibilities
- Steering System Design and Component Release
- Own component lifetime management for chassis steering hardware, including steering gears, power steering actuators, intermediate shafts, columns, and structural mounting brackets.
- Manage and execute Bill of Materials (BOM) creation, option codes, engineering change notices, and official part releases within corporate Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T;) principles, conduct 3D packaging analyses, and review CAD models using NX or CATIA to guarantee dynamic clearance during suspension articulation and steering travel.
- Drive root cause investigations (utilizing 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone frameworks) for steering system quality, dynamic noise,
or assembly issues encountered during prototype builds, physical testing, or launch.
- System Validation, Dynamics, and Safety Integration
- Author, maintain, and execute Design Verification Plans and Reports (DVP&R;) for bench testing, corrosion, fatigue, environmental exposure, and vehicle level durability.
- Develop and maintain Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) documents, linking failure modes to critical supplier characteristics and vehicle functional safety goals.
- Partner with Vehicle Dynamics and Functional Safety teams to support steering tuning, assist curve definition, and compliance with ISO 26262 safety requirements.
- Supplier Leadership and Manufacturing Support
- Serve as the primary technical liaison to Tier 1 steering suppliers, evaluating manufacturing feasibility (DFM/DFA), tooling schedules, and production readiness.
- Support vehicle assembly plants remotely and on site during prototype builds, pilot runs, and ramp-up (Job 1) to address steering column alignment, torque-to-turn issues, and plant end-of-line calibration.
- Identify and implement Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE) opportunities to optimize system weight and cost without compromising steering feel or structural safety.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of direct engineering experience as a Design and Release Engineer specifically within chassis steering systems, EPS modules,
or related suspension/chassis mechanical commodities.
- Strong background in automotive product development processes, including APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, DVP&R;, and engineering change notices.
- Practical understanding of steering mechanics, kinematics, column collapse mechanisms for crash safety, casting/forging processes, and electric power steering gear architectures.
- Proficiency with automotive CAD and PLM tools (NX/Teamcenter or Enovia/CATIA) for vehicle packaging, kinematics clearance, and release management.
- Advanced spoken and written professional communication skills in English and Spanish.
- Must be legally authorized to work and currently reside in Mexico.
- Willingness to travel periodically to assembly plants, proving grounds, or supplier facilities as dictated by program launch milestones.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
- Advanced proficiency and practical expertise using Siemens NX for 3D modeling and Teamcenter for engineering release.
- Practical knowledge of steering system vehicle dynamics tuning, column NVH isolation, and steering gear bench test setups.
- Understanding of Functional Safety standards (ISO 26262) as applied to electronic power steering hardware and actuators.
- Practical understanding of GD&T; ASME Y14.5 standards and datum scheme definition for chassis interfaces.
Location and Work Arrangement
This position is a fully remote role open to candidates who legally reside anywhere within Mexico. Occasional travel to engineering centers, proving grounds, assembly plants, or supplier operations may be required based on project and launch needs.
