Turbomachinery Engineer (sCO₂ Power Systems) Remote from Mexico
· Full-time, US hours
· Early-stage energy hardware
About the company
We’re partnering with an early-stage US energy company based in San Francisco. They are building modular power plants that deliver both electricity and cooling from a single integrated system. The platform combines supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂) power conversion with thermally driven cooling and runs on a range of fuel and heat sources. These are compact, factory-integrated systems for critical infrastructure, where reliable power, thermal management, and fast deployment matter most. The role You’ll own the design and development of the high-speed rotating machinery at the core of the sCO₂ power conversion system. The scope runs from aerodynamic sizing through rotor design, supplier engagement, assembly, and test. You’ll turn cycle-level requirements into turbine and compressor hardware that is reliable and can be manufactured. You’ll work directly with process, electrical, and mechanical engineers on the interfaces that drive overall machine performance. What you’ll do
• Lead preliminary and detailed design of radial turbines and centrifugal compressors for high-pressure sCO₂ operation.
• Build aerodynamic models, meanline calculations, velocity triangles, performance maps, and off-design predictions.
• Run CFD, thermal, structural, and rotordynamic analyses to evaluate efficiency, mechanical integrity, and operability.
• Define requirements for rotors, shafts, impellers, casings, bearings, seals, clearances, and thermal expansion.
• Evaluate turbine–compressor–generator arrangements, including single-shaft and coupled architectures.
• Assess overspeed, fatigue, creep, vibration, and other failure modes, and turn the findings into design requirements.
• Produce CAD assemblies, drawings, specifications, tolerances, and manufacturing documentation.
• Work with suppliers on materials, machining, balancing, inspection, assembly, and quality.
• Define test instrumentation and acceptance criteria, and support prototype assembly, commissioning, troubleshooting, and validation. What you bring
• BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years designing, analyzing, building, or testing high-speed turbomachinery or comparable rotating equipment.
• Hands-on experience with radial turbines, centrifugal compressors, turbochargers, or turbopumps.
• Strong grasp of compressible flow, turbomachinery aerodynamics, thermodynamics, and mechanical design.
• Proficiency with mechanical CAD plus CFD and/or FEA tools.
• Working knowledge of rotor dynamics, bearing and sealing systems, and thermal-mechanical behavior.
• A track record of taking designs from calculation and simulation into physical hardware.
• Professional English: you can explain design decisions to US engineers and push back in a technical review.
• Availability to work full-time on US hours, remotely with a San Francisco-based team. Nice to have
• sCO₂ or other closed-loop Brayton/Rankine-cycle turbomachinery.
• Machinery running above 50,000 RPM, and high-pressure gas sealing.
• Gas foil or magnetic bearings, and permanent-magnet generator integration.
• AxSTREAM, Concepts NREC, ANSYS CFX/Fluent, or similar tools.
• Prototype testing, precision machining, rotor balancing, and GD&T.; Compensation (choose one)
• Payroll: MX$53,600 gross/month with all benefits required by Mexican law.
• Contractor: MX$67,000 net/month, with 12 PTO days and 15 days of aguinaldo. Why join
• You’ll help lay the engineering foundations of a new distributed energy platform. The team wants people who take ownership across disciplines, move easily between analysis and hardware, and want to see their designs built, tested, and running in the field.
