Process Engineer – sCO₂ Power & Thermal Systems
Remote from Mexico · Full time · US business hours
? Salary: MX$44,800 gross per month on payroll, with statutory benefits (prestaciones de ley)
Contractor option: MX$56,000 per month if you prefer to invoice as an independent contractor (RESICO)
About the company
Our client is an early-stage San Francisco startup developing modular power plants that deliver electricity and cooling from a single integrated system. The platform combines supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂) power conversion with thermally driven cooling and is designed to run on a range of fuel and heat sources. They build compact, factory-integrated systems for critical infrastructure, where reliable power, thermal management and deployment speed matter.
The role
You will own thermal-fluid process development for the integrated power and cooling architecture, turning thermodynamic models into complete, buildable process systems: the sCO₂ power loop, thermal inputs, recuperation, heat rejection and adsorption-based cooling integration. The work spans first-principles modeling, equipment sizing, PFDs and P&IDs;, controls philosophy, vendor engineering and prototype validation.
What you'll do
- Lead process design for integrated sCO₂ Brayton-cycle power generation and thermally driven cooling.
- Build steady-state and transient models, mass and energy balances, pressure-loss calculations and off-design performance analyses.
- Define design and operating conditions for turbomachinery, heat exchangers, piping, vessels and auxiliary equipment.
- Produce and maintain PFDs, P&IDs;, equipment datasheets, line lists and process design documentation.
- Size and specify recuperators, primary heat exchangers, coolers, valves, pressure equipment, piping and pumps.
- Develop strategies to recover and use thermal energy in adsorption-based cooling subsystems.
- Analyze performance across changes in heat source, ambient conditions,
power demand and cooling load.
- Write startup, shutdown, part-load and fault-response operating philosophies, including instrumentation and safety interlocks.
- Support process hazard reviews, vendor evaluations, procurement and integration with other engineering disciplines.
- Commission prototype systems, interpret test data, validate models and drive improvements.
What you bring
- BS in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
- 4+ years in process engineering, thermal-fluid systems, power generation or industrial energy equipment.
- Strong command of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and process equipment design.
- Hands-on experience producing process simulations, PFDs, P&IDs;, equipment specifications and design calculations.
- Proficiency in at least one of Python, MATLAB, EES or Aspen HYSYS/Plus.
- Knowledge of heat exchangers, pressure systems, piping, valves, instrumentation and controls.
- Experience taking a design to real hardware through fabrication, commissioning or testing.
- Advanced English: you can explain and defend design decisions with US engineering teams.
- Availability to work full time on US business hours, remotely from Mexico.
Nice to have
- sCO₂, Organic Rankine, Brayton or other closed-loop power cycles
- Adsorption/absorption refrigeration, heat recovery and thermal integration
- Printed-circuit or other compact high-effectiveness heat exchangers
- CoolProp, REFPROP, transient modeling and custom thermodynamic models
- High-pressure gas systems and ASME pressure vessel/piping codes
- Pilot-scale thermal plant fabrication, commissioning and validation
Why join
You'll help lay the engineering foundations of a new distributed energy platform. This is a role for people who take ownership across disciplines, move comfortably between analysis and hardware, and want to see their designs built, tested and running in the field.
