Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Rust Backend Engineer to develop and integrate Rust package ecosystem support into Google Artifact Registry (AR). This role is part of a high-impact Google Cloud Security initiative focused on building secure, reliable, and scalable artifact management capabilities for the Rust programming language and its package manager, Cargo. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Rust, package management ecosystems, distributed backend systems, and cloud infrastructure. The engineer will be responsible for end-to-end feature development, security pipeline integration, automated testing, and production deployment while maintaining high standards of reliability and code quality.

Key Responsibilities
• Backend Development: Design, develop, test, and maintain production-grade backend components for Google Artifact Registry supporting Rust and Cargo package standards.
• Feature Development: Implement Standard, Remote (Default, Custom, Internal, and Authenticated), and Virtual repository modes.
• Artifact Management: Develop artifact copy operations, download rules, ingestion attestations, fingerprinting, and security verification workflows, including Promote and Verify capabilities.
• Security Integration: Integrate Rust artifact support with internal security ingestion pipelines and tools such as Google Cloud Build for vulnerability scanning, threat quarantine,



and SLSA provenance verification.
• Testing and Code Quality: Develop comprehensive unit and integration tests, targeting 90%+ unit test coverage and 100% coverage of critical user journeys, where applicable.
• Production Reliability: Take ownership of design, implementation, code reviews, testing, and production rollout while preventing regressions and service disruptions.
• Documentation: Maintain technical design documents, implementation specifications, testing documentation, and operational guidance.
• Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional engineering, security, and infrastructure teams to deliver reliable and secure artifact management solutions. Required Qualifications
• 8+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering and large-scale distributed systems.
• Strong hands-on proficiency in Rust, with practical experience in the Rust ecosystem and Cargo package manager.
• Professional experience with Go and/or Java. Candidates with strong C/C++ experience and the ability to quickly adapt to Go or Java may also be considered.
• Experience designing, developing, and maintaining highly available, mission-critical backend services.
• Understanding of package registry protocols, artifact management platforms, dependency management,



or container registries.
• Strong knowledge of automated testing, unit and integration testing, CI/CD pipelines, and code quality practices.
• Experience working with cloud platforms and production infrastructure, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguous requirements, and take end-to-end ownership of complex engineering initiatives. Preferred Qualifications
• Hands-on experience with Google Cloud services, including Artifact Registry, Cloud Build, Cloud Run, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
• Experience with software supply chain security, artifact integrity, ingestion security, and vulnerability scanning.
• Familiarity with SLSA provenance, attestations, authenticity verification, and secure software delivery practices.
• Experience implementing security controls, quarantine workflows, and verification gates in artifact management systems.
• Experience maintaining high-traffic production services with strict reliability and availability requirements. Top Required Skills
