Construction Bookkeeper – Job Costing & WIP (Remote)

Location: Remote

Employment Type: Full-Time

Working Hours: U.S. Eastern Time business hours

Experience Required: 5+ years of bookkeeping experience in the construction industry, including job costing, WIP, and completed contract and percentage-of-completion accounting

About the Role

US Job Finders is seeking experienced, detail-driven Construction Bookkeepers to join the accounting team of a growing multi-entity construction group based in South Florida. The group's companies cover impact windows and doors, roofing, metal fabrication and solar, and each one keeps its own set of books.

The company recently moved its internal accounting to accrual-basis, job-level accounting and recognizes revenue using the completed contract method. Customer deposits and job costs sit in work in progress (WIP) on the balance sheet until each project is finished, and then revenue and cost of goods sold are recognized. With a high volume of active projects across several companies, the team needs bookkeepers who already understand this process and can start contributing right away.

This is not an entry-level role, and it is not general bookkeeping. You must understand construction accounting: how job costing works, how WIP and customer deposits move through the balance sheet, and how revenue is recognized under both the completed contract and percentage-of-completion methods. You will help catch up and clean up the books, keep estimates and job costs accurate, reconcile accounts, and help the team close each month faster, with a goal of closing within five days of month-end.

Key Responsibilities

Job Costing & Work in Progress (WIP)

- Maintain accurate job costing for a high volume of active construction projects across several companies

- Record material, installation, permitting, engineering and other job costs to the correct project and WIP accounts

- Update estimates as projects move forward: replace early placeholder estimates with presente material and installation costs once orders go into production

- Track customer deposits and progress payments against each project

- Review WIP balances and flag projects with missing, incorrect or outdated cost information

Revenue Recognition & Project Close-Out

- Recognize revenue each month for completed projects under the completed contract method, moving related costs out of WIP and applying customer deposits

- Verify project completion dates and status by matching accounting records to the company's CRM (Hub Spot)

- Track post-completion costs (such as service and warranty work)

in the right categories

- Help apply the company's documented policies for long-running or exception projects

Bookkeeping, Reconciliations & Month-End Close

- Perform bank and credit card reconciliations for several company files on time every month

- Process accounts payable: vendor and manufacturer bills, credits and payments

- Process accounts receivable: invoicing, customer deposits, financing payments and collections tracking

- Complete assigned month-end close tasks across several entities, following the close checklist

- Help shorten the monthly close, with a goal of closing within five days of month-end

Cleanup, Catch-Up & Audit Support

- Help catch up and clean up current-year books so balance sheet accounts (WIP, customer deposits, estimates) are accurate

- Audit project records against the CRM and correct errors from the transition to accrual and completed contract accounting

- Prepare detailed job-level schedules and documentation for the outside CPA, including prior-year project costs and revenue support

- Enter and update project data needed for job costing and reporting

Reporting & Team Support

- Support preparation of profit and loss, balance sheet and job profitability reports for each company

- Keep records organized, documented and ready for review by the Accounting Manager and CPA

- Communicate proactively about missing information, discrepancies and deadlines

- Work closely with a small in-house accounting team and take ownership of assigned companies and tasks

Required Skills & Qualifications

- 5+ years of bookkeeping experience in the construction industry

- Strong hands-on experience with job costing and work in progress (WIP) accounting

- Solid understanding of completed contract and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, including cost-to-cost methods

- Clear understanding of accrual accounting, customer deposits, and how revenue and costs move between the balance sheet and P&L;

- Advanced Quick Books experience, including working across multiple company files

- Strong experience with bank and credit card reconciliations, A/P and A/R

- Able to explain accounting concepts clearly and confidently in conversation, not just on paper
