You will own the requirements, financial logic, and quality of a financial planning platform. You will work between the client, designers, developers, and QA to make sure what gets built matches what was asked, and that the numbers are right.

The Role

DOCUMENTATION

- Maintain the TRD as the single source of truth for permissions, business rules, formulas, notifications and integrations.
- Write change specs when scope changes, and keep section numbering, cross-references and the changelog consistent.
- Log every open question with an owner and a recommendation. Never settle an unclear point without saying so.
- Keep permission matrices, state machines, ERDs, process flows and email templates up to date.
- Compare the TRD against meeting transcripts, client decisions and shipped behavior to find gaps.

QA
- Write test cases per TRD section that cover every role, tier and app.
- Test staging and production end to end: onboarding, payments and refunds, scheduling, scenarios, PDF reports and notifications.
- Rebuild calculations in a spreadsheet and compare the results with the app.
- File reproducible bugs, retest fixes and sign off releases.

FINANCIAL LOGIC
- Turn experts' rules into formulas: inputs, units, rounding, order of operations and fallbacks.
- Maintain the yearly parameter tables (tax brackets, contribution limits, poverty guidelines, tuition) and flag IRS or Department of Education changes.

COORDINATION
- Keep the backlog prioritized with the PM and engineering lead, and track blockers.
- Support sprint check-ins and send short status updates.
- Be the first contact when the team asks how something is supposed to work.

Requirements

- 3+ years as a business analyst, product analyst, technical PM or QA analyst on SaaS or web platforms.
- Experience writing PRDs, TRDs or functional specs that engineers built from, including long, versioned Markdown documents.

- Experience writing user stories with testable acceptance criteria. Good understanding of permissions, data relationships and state changes.
- Hands-on manual QA experience, including writing test cases and filing reproducible bugs.
- Strong math: percentages, compounding, amortization and time value of money.
- Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills.
- Can read an ERD and write basic SQL.
- English at C1 or higher, written and spoken.
- Detail-oriented, organized and willing to say "this is unclear" instead of guessing.

DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE

- You don't need to be a financial planner, but you need to learn the domain quickly. You should have working knowledge of most of these areas by the end of onboarding:
- U.S. income tax: brackets, filing statuses, marginal vs. effective rates, FICA, SALT
- Retirement accounts: 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), TSP, IRA, Roth and Backdoor Roth, HSA, SEP/SIMPLE, and the annual IRS limits
- Planning: cash flow, net worth, college savings (529, UTMA/UGMA), insurance needs and retirement projections
- Federal student loans: DR plans (IBR, PAYE, ICR, SAVE, RAP), PSLF, discretionary income, NSLDS data and refinancing
- Regulatory change: spotting IRS, Department of Education and court updates and routing them to the experts

NICE TO HAVE

- Experience in fintech, wealth management, tax software or student loan servicing
- Finance, accounting or engineering background (e.g., CFP coursework, CPA track)
- Experience with Playwright or other automated testing
- Experience with payment, subscription, SSO or calendar integrations
- Diagramming skills (ERDs, swimlanes, state machines)
- Awareness of security and compliance basics for financial PII
- Experience using AI tools for specs and test cases, and checking their output
- Spanish and English
