About We Whiten
We Whiten is a US-based cosmetic teeth-whitening studio brand with 25+ locations across Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Since opening our first studio in January 2020, we’ve grown into a multi-state operation with salaried studio leaders, hourly studio staff, and remote sales and support teams. We’re backed by a strategic equity partner and continue to expand.
About the Role
We’re looking for a hands-on Head of HR to own HR administration, payroll, and compliance for our US workforce of approximately 60 part-time and full-time employees across six states.
This is a hands-on, accountable role—not a supervisory position. You’ll manage payroll, time and attendance, employee claims and leave, and help ensure compliance across our US operations.
You’ll report to our Director of Operations and work closely with our Senior Director of People, who leads recruiting, retention, and culture.
We’re looking for someone with direct US HR and payroll experience who can take ownership of these responsibilities from day one. You should already understand US payroll, overtime requirements, and unemployment claims.
What You’ll Own
- Payroll & Compensation: Administer payroll for salaried and hourly employees across multiple states using BambooHR.
- Wage & Hour Compliance: Track and manage overtime for hourly staff, including state-specific requirements.
- Scheduling & Time Off: Support staff scheduling and manage PTO and time-off administration.
- Final Paychecks:
Ensure final paychecks meet each state’s timing and payout requirements.
- Onboarding & Offboarding: Manage new-hire paperwork, employee transitions, and system access.
- Benefits Administration: Coordinate benefits enrollment, changes, and ongoing administration.
- Claims & Leave: Handle unemployment claims, workers’ compensation, and leave administration.
- Payroll Compliance: Manage wage garnishments and agency notices.
- HRIS & Employee Records: Own employee records and keep BambooHR accurate, organized, and up to date.
- Employee Support: Manage the HR inbox and respond to questions about pay, time off, and benefits.
- Policies & Compliance: Maintain policies, update the employee handbook, and support compliance across Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
- Legal Coordination: Work with outside employment counsel when needed.
What You Bring
- Direct US payroll experience: You have personally processed payroll for a US employer with hourly employees in at least two states. Candidates without direct US payroll experience will not be considered.
- US wage-and-hour knowledge: You understand FLSA overtime, final-pay rules, PTO payout requirements, and state-specific variations.
- Claims administration: You have direct experience handling unemployment claims and workers’ compensation administration.
- HR systems experience: BambooHR experience is strongly preferred, and you’re comfortable learning new systems.
- Strong communication skills: You’re fluent in written and spoken English. Spanish is a plus.
- Discretion and accuracy: You handle confidential information carefully and maintain a high standard of accuracy.
- Independence and organization: You’re self-directed, organized, and comfortable running this function largely on your own.
This Role May Not Be the Right Fit If…
- Your experience is limited to Mexican payroll (IMSS, nómina, aguinaldo) without hands-on US payroll experience.
- You’ve supported HR operations but have never owned payroll end to end.
- You need a team or supervisor to manage the technical aspects of HR administration.
- You’re unable to commit to a fixed schedule aligned with US Mountain and Central time.
Working Arrangement & Compensation
- Location: Remote, based in Mexico
- Employment type: Full-time independent contractor
- Schedule: 40 hours per week, aligned with US Mountain and Central time
- Compensation: $600–$750 USD per week, paid biweekly
- Work environment: Reliable internet connection and a quiet workspace required
