Purpose of the role

Builds the application overlay layer that lets plant engineers, data stewards and delivery teams configure assets, map signals and deploy templates without any infrastructure access. You turn patterns into runtime systems through configuration, and make the platform easy and safe to adopt.

Key responsibilities:

1. Build the application overlays and configure the user experience for asset configuration, signal mapping and template deployment.
2. Apply user experience design practice: user research, task flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, a reusable design system and usability testing.
3.

Develop the UI using the latest UI frameworks and component libraries, with accessibility and performance standards.
4. Link templates to deployment pipelines so an approved template becomes a deployed runtime system without manual steps.

Configuration-driven capabilities

1. Develop configuration-driven platform capabilities in the application overlay layer, built on the canonical schemas.
2. Design and implement configuration models, a template engine and deployment orchestration: parameterised templates, validation, preview and diff, approvals and rollback.
3. Enable template-to-deployment workflows that turn approved patterns into running tenant systems with no manual steps.

User-facing configuration experience

1. Build user-facing systems to configure assets, map signals to the asset hierarchy and deploy templates, with guided workflows and clear validation messages.
2. Generate forms and validation from the canonical schemas so the UI never introduces custom schema.
3. Provide role- and tenant-scoped access, change history and audit trails for every configuration change.

Developer and user experience

1. Improve developer experience: golden-path templates, SDK/CLI, developer portal, sandbox environments, documentation and examples.
2. Measure adoption and friction (time to onboard an asset or line, template reuse, failed deployments) and drive improvements.
3. Run usability sessions with plant engineers and data stewards; translate feedback into backlog.

Engineering and collaboration

1. Collaborate with frontend, backend, edge and security teams for a seamless overlay experience across the platform.
2. Ensure compliance with the no-manual-deployment and no-custom-schema rules through policy-as-code and pipeline checks.
3. Maintain automated tests (unit, contract, end-to-end), accessibility and performance budgets for the overlay.

Required qualifications and experience

Must have

1. Hands-on experience building backend and frontend applications (for example TypeScript/React with Node.js, Python or Java services).
2. Experience designing configuration engines, template systems or rules/validation frameworks driven by JSON Schema or similar.
3. Strong API skills (REST, OpenAPI) and experience consuming contract-first services.
4. Familiarity with CI/CD, GitOps and automated deployment; comfortable working with infrastructure teams without needing direct infra access.
5. Good UX sense for data-heavy internal tools; experience testing UIs and APIs.
6. Demonstrated UX design capability (flows, prototypes, usability testing) and UI development with a modern framework such as React, Angular or Vue.
7. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.

Good to have

1. Low-code or no-code or other configuration-driven platforms; workflow engines (Step Functions, Argo Workflows, Temporal).
2. Developer portals such as Backstage; CLI and SDK design.
3. Policy-as-code (OPA, Kyverno) and Argo CD or Flux.
4. Industrial context: asset hierarchies, tag mapping, SCADA or historian configuration tools.

Preferred certifications

1. AWS Certified Developer – Associate (preferred).
2. Kubernetes application developer certification, CKAD (nice to have).
