The opportunity

We are hiring someone who enjoys picking up the phone, earning a customer’s trust, and asking for the order.

Big Hammer Wines is an online fine-wine retailer founded in 2009. We sell collectible bottles, allocated wines, and carefully selected everyday offers to customers across the United States.

You will build a portfolio of repeat buyers by understanding what they enjoy, recommending relevant wines, and giving them a reason to buy again. Success means more purchasing customers, larger orders, and lasting relationships that produce profitable repeat business.

You will have an existing customer base to develop. Our AI tools help prioritize opportunities and prepare calls with purchase history, preferences, and a reason to reach out. You bring the judgment, conversation, and follow-through that turn those opportunities into orders.

Our customer-service team handles order status, shipping, and returns, allowing you to focus on selling and developing customer relationships.

What you will do

- Make proactive outbound sales calls every working day. Reach collectors who have gone quiet, promising first-time buyers, and customers whose preferences match new arrivals.
- Build and manage a personal portfolio of customers, with consistent follow-up and a clear next step for each opportunity.
- Learn the wines and current offers. Recommend bottles based on the customer’s tastes, budget, cellar, and occasion.
- Increase order value through relevant recommendations, case purchases, and complementary selections while protecting margin.
- Ask for the order, handle objections, and move conversations toward a buying decision.
- Send timely personal follow-up emails or texts through approved company channels, respecting customer communication preferences.
- Respond promptly to inbound sales opportunities and call when a conversation will help close the sale.
- Develop new business with gift buyers, clubs, and companies, including corporate and holiday gifting.
- Keep accurate customer preferences, conversation notes, opportunities, and follow-up commitments in the CRM.
- Track your activity and results, including conversations, conversion, orders, revenue, average order value, and repeat purchases.
- Use AI daily to improve preparation, follow-up, customer notes, and sales productivity. Check its output before using it with customers.

Required qualifications

- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible sales experience with demonstrated, measurable success. You have personally met or exceeded sales targets, closed business, and developed repeat customers. You can explain your targets, results, timeframe,

and individual contribution.
- A completed college degree.
- Completed structured sales training through an employer, professional training provider, or academic program. You can identify the training, explain what you learned, and demonstrate its application in discovery, recommendations, objection handling, closing, and follow-up.
- Demonstrated outbound phone-selling ability. You are comfortable initiating conversations, speaking with discerning customers, and asking for the sale. You are willing and able to perform this work personally every day.
- Fluent or near-native spoken and written English. You can conduct a natural sales conversation and write clear, professional customer correspondence.
- A strong interest in wine and a commitment to learning. You can discuss wine confidently, explain recommendations clearly, and recognize when you need to verify a fact.
- Practical daily experience with AI tools. You use AI for substantive work and can demonstrate a recent example.
- Experience managing a sales pipeline in a CRM. Your notes are useful, your commitments are recorded, and your follow-up happens on time.
- Strong numerical judgment. You understand sales targets, conversion rates, average order value, repeat purchasing, and the effect of discounting on margin.
- The organization, discretion, and accountability to work independently in a remote role.
- Reliable internet, a quiet calling environment, availability during Pacific Time business hours, and the ability to travel to San Diego periodically.

Preferred qualifications

- Sales experience in fine wine, luxury goods, premium hospitality, or another business serving discerning private clients.
- WSET Level 2 or higher, or comparable wine education.
- Experience developing corporate gifting or business accounts.
- Familiarity with Shopify, Gorgias, Klaviyo, or Postscript.

How success will be measured

- Revenue and orders generated through your calls and follow-up.
- Conversion of customer conversations into purchases.
- Average order value and repeat purchasing within your customer portfolio.
- Reactivation of customers who have stopped buying.
- New business accounts developed.
- Consistent outbound activity, timely follow-up, and accurate customer records.

- Selling discipline that protects both margin and customer trust.

What we offer

- A customer base to develop and a changing selection of wines to sell.
- Base compensation plus the opportunity to earn more through measurable sales performance.
- AI tools and customer information to support your work.
- Direct exposure to the fine-wine business and opportunities to learn from experienced wine professionals.
- Opportunities for tastings, wine events, and travel.
- A health-insurance stipend, vacation, and company holidays.
- Greater responsibility as you demonstrate results.
