About Headshots.comHeadshots.com produces studio-quality professional headshots from smartphone photos, delivered within three business days. Enterprise clients, including Boeing, Capital One, and American Express, use the service to standardize professional imagery across their organizations.
The RoleThe Production Manager owns output quality, throughput, and team performance for the photo editing function. The immediate mandate is to restructure the team and production model to meet high-volume demand and increasingly complex client requirements, operating a hybrid workflow in which human retouchers and AI tools each handle the work they are best suited to. The role also serves as the technical lead for editing in product development and is accountable for image quality standards across all production.
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategy &
• Restructuring
- Assess the current team structure, roles, and workflows, and lead the restructuring required to support high-volume and complex production
- Design and implement a hybrid human–AI production model, defining which tasks are automated, which require human retouching, and how quality is controlled at each handoff
- Build capacity plans and staffing models that scale with order volume and client complexity
- Establish tiered workflows that route standard, complex, and enterprise orders to the appropriate level of editing and review
- Report production strategy, resourcing needs, and performance results to leadership
Production & • Quality
- Own daily editing operations and delivery against turnaround commitments
- Set and enforce quality standards for lighting, skin retouching, color, and consistency
- Run quality review, identify recurring defects, and drive corrective action
- Perform edits directly on escalated or complex orders
Product & • Technology
- Define measurable image quality specifications with product and engineering, applicable to both editors and automated systems
- Evaluate AI-generated and AI-assisted output; categorize failure modes (skin texture, likeness, lighting, edge artifacts) and report findings to inform model and pipeline improvements
- Conduct pre-release testing of features and workflow changes; author acceptance criteria and reproducible defect reports
- Identify automation opportunities and scope requirements for internal tooling
- Advise on product decisions affecting editing tools, file handling, color management, and delivery specifications
- Analyze production metrics (turnaround, revision rate, QC failure reasons) and present findings to inform product priorities
People Management
- Lead, develop, and retain the photo editing team, including senior editors and team leads
- Hire, train, and onboard editors to brand standards
- Define roles, career paths, and performance expectations; conduct performance management, including corrective action where required
- Lead the team through restructuring and process change while maintaining output and engagement
- Train the team on new tools and hybrid workflows as they are introduced
Operations
- Manage queue capacity and deadlines
- Identify and resolve workflow bottlenecks
- Track and report KPIs; maintain standard operating procedures
Cross-Functional & • Client Requirements
- Coordinate with internal teams to fulfill client-specific requirements
- Balance quality and turnaround against client commitments
- Oversee development of background templates, sample images, and visual assets
QualificationsExperience
- 10+ years of professional photo retouching, with emphasis on headshots or portraiture
- 5+ years of people management, leading creative or production teams, including hiring, performance management, and team development
- Proven record of restructuring or scaling a production operation to meet increased volume and complexity
- Demonstrated record of meeting quality and turnaround targets at volume
Technical
- Expert proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, including actions, batch processing, and non-destructive workflows
- Working knowledge of color management, color spaces, file formats, compression, and resolution standards for digital and print delivery
- Experience running hybrid human–AI retouching workflows in a production environment, including deciding where human editing is required
- Experience working with product or engineering teams: writing requirements, testing features, reporting defects
- Proficiency with production data and dashboards
- Preferred: scripting or automation experience in image workflows
