Organizational context: The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is dedicated to promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities globally. As the UN's focal point for urbanization, it collaborates with partners to foster inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban environments. This internship is based in the UN-Habitat Subregional Office for Mexico, Cuba, and Central America in Mexico City, supporting the Project Implementation Coordination area.
Job purpose: This internship aims to support the Project Implementation Coordination area within the UN-Habitat Subregional Office for Mexico, Cuba, and Central America. The intern will contribute to the operational effectiveness of the office by assisting with portfolio management, project follow-up, and the development of essential tools and documents. Key contributions include maintaining the project portfolio management platform, monitoring project milestones and timelines, preparing project synthesis documents, and supporting the coordination of joint missions and meetings. The role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in project implementation and coordination within an international development context, contributing to UN-Habitat's mission of mitigating negative urbanization effects and improving urban populations' quality of life.
Responsibilities: The intern will support the Project Implementation Coordination area by assisting with portfolio management and project follow-up. Key duties include developing, updating, and maintaining the project portfolio management platform. The intern will also monitor project implementation milestones, outputs, and timelines across the office's active portfolio. Additionally,
responsibilities involve supporting the preparation of project synthesis documents and assisting in the programmatic coordination of joint missions, including preparing mission scopes, work agendas, and follow-up documentation. The role also entails supporting the preparation and follow-up of coordination meetings and providing substantive knowledge and recommendations to the Project Implementation Coordinator for area optimization.
Education: Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent), in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level), or have graduated with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree. Proficiency in standard software applications like Microsoft Office Suite is required. Fluency in Spanish (oral and written) is mandatory, with English knowledge being desirable. A background in Urban Planning, International Development, Public Administration, Project Management, or related fields is preferred.
Work experience: Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship's focus is necessary. Interest in urban development, sustainable cities, housing, resilience, public space, or international development is required. Knowledge in automating data-related processes and workflows is desirable.
Skills: Computer literacy in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite), MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, SharePoint, Canva, MS Teams. Knowledge of HTML, data visualization tools, or project management software is desirable. Fluency in Spanish (oral and written). Interest in urban development, sustainable cities, housing, resilience, public space, or international development. Knowledge in automating data-related processes and workflows is desirable.
