Azure DevOps Engineer

Pay Rate: $22.50-$30/hour

Role Summary

The primary mandate of this role is to ensure production systems remain performant, healthy, secure, and reliable, with application and database performance serving as top priorities. The role combines hands-on backend/application engineering, ideally in C#/.NET, with strong DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) capabilities across observability, infrastructure as code, cloud operations, deployments, scalability, and incident prevention.

This individual should be comfortable working across both application and infrastructure layers, from developing and enhancing backend services to diagnosing production issues through logs, metrics, traces, and database behavior. The role will also play a key part in driving the organization's on-premises to cloud migration strategy while improving the resilience, redundancy, and scalability of its platform.

Operating within a product-focused and highly regulated environment, the idóneo candidate brings strong technical depth, practical judgment, and ownership. They should be able to explain not only what technologies they have used, but how solutions were implemented, why particular approaches were chosen, and the tradeoffs involved. The organization values practical, proven solutions and prioritizes system stability, data integrity, and operational excellence over adopting technology trends for their own sake.

Key Responsibilities

Backend & Application Engineering

- Develop, enhance, troubleshoot, and support backend applications and services, ideally using C#/.NET.
- Perform hands-on application engineering rather than limiting involvement to infrastructure support or reviewing existing application code.
- Work across application, database, and infrastructure layers to identify performance bottlenecks and improve overall system behavior.
- Partner with application engineering teams on architecture, implementation decisions, production readiness, and technical improvements.

Production Performance & Reliability

- Serve as a primary owner of production system health, availability, and performance.
- Build, maintain, and scale highly available production environments supporting APIs, services, and business-critical applications.
- Design and implement resilient architectures with redundancy, failover capabilities, and zero-downtime deployment strategies.
- Develop and enhance observability capabilities across applications, databases, infrastructure, and networks through centralized metrics, logs, and distributed tracing.
- Personally diagnose and resolve application and production issues using logs, metrics, traces, database behavior, and other relevant telemetry.
- Establish proactive monitoring and alerting frameworks to identify and resolve issues before customer impact occurs.

- Generate operational and SLA reporting for business and technical stakeholders.
- Diagnose application and database performance issues, including SQL query behavior, indexing, execution plans, and application-to-database interactions.

Scalability & Capacity Planning

- Design and implement horizontal and vertical scaling strategies for APIs, web services, applications, and database platforms.
- Conduct load, stress, and performance testing to validate scalability assumptions and identify bottlenecks.
- Partner with engineering teams to support capacity planning and growth initiatives across production workloads.

Infrastructure & Cloud Operations

- Provision, manage, and optimize Azure cloud infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code practices, with Terraform preferred.
- Build and support containerized and cloud-based application environments.
- Apply practical cloud networking and security fundamentals across areas such as VNets, VPN connectivity, Web Application Firewalls (WAFs), Network Security Groups (NSGs), TLS, and related controls.
- Maintain development, test, staging, and production environments while ensuring configuration consistency and operational health.

Deployment & Release Engineering

- Build, support, optimize, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines used for .NET/C# application delivery.
- Improve deployment automation, release reliability, and operational efficiency across development and production environments.
- Partner with engineering teams to ensure applications are designed and deployed with production reliability, observability, scalability, and maintainability in mind.

Cloud Migration & Modernization

- Lead and support the migration of on-premises applications and infrastructure to Microsoft Azure as part of the organization's cloud transformation strategy.
- Assess existing application and infrastructure dependencies and recommend appropriate modernization, cloud-native, or lift-and-shift approaches.
- Support the implementation of hybrid-cloud architectures where appropriate.
- Evaluate modernization approaches based on practical considerations such as reliability, maintainability, performance, complexity, and operational value.

Required Experience & Qualifications

- 7+ years of experience across backend/application engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), cloud infrastructure, or related disciplines supporting production environments.
- 10+ years of relevant experience preferred.
- Hands-on backend/application development experience, ideally with C#/.NET,

with the ability to actively develop, modify, troubleshoot, and support application code.
- Strong SRE/DevOps experience spanning production operations, reliability, infrastructure as code, containers, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and deployment automation.
- Demonstrated success owning production system performance, availability, and operational health.
- Hands-on experience diagnosing real-world application and production issues using logs, metrics, distributed traces, database behavior, and other observability data.
- Strong SQL and relational database competency, including the ability to troubleshoot application/database interactions and investigate performance issues involving queries, indexing, and execution plans.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD platforms and deployment tooling such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar technologies.
- Strong experience with Microsoft Azure services across compute, application hosting, monitoring, automation, networking, and security.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code methodologies. Terraform experience is preferred, including candidates with prior Terraform experience who currently work with other IaC technologies.
- Experience designing and supporting serverless, containerized, and cloud-native solutions using services such as Azure Functions, App Services, Container Apps, and Logic Apps.
- Practical understanding of cloud networking and security fundamentals, including concepts such as VPNs, VNets, WAFs, NSGs, TLS, and related technologies.
- Experience implementing scalable, resilient, and highly available distributed systems.
- Hands-on experience with API load and performance testing tools such as k6, JMeter, Azure Load Testing, or equivalent.
- Experience implementing and using observability and monitoring solutions such as Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Grafana, Prometheus, or similar platforms.
- Ability to demonstrate technical depth by clearly explaining solution architecture, implementation approaches, technical decisions, and associated tradeoffs.
- Strong English communication skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated initiative, ownership, engagement, and willingness to work hands-on across application and production environments.

Preferred Qualifications

- Deep SQL Server administration, performance tuning, and database optimization experience.
- Microsoft Azure certifications such as AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-400, or equivalent.
- Experience supporting hybrid cloud environments and large-scale cloud migration initiatives.
- Advanced experience with cloud networking or infrastructure security.
- Experience working within distributed, nearshore, or globally distributed engineering teams.
- Experience supporting organizations operating in highly regulated industries.
