About the Role

We build and maintain high-reliability, data-intensive systems that government motor vehicle agencies depend on to test, license, and certify drivers across more than two dozen jurisdictions in the United States and Canada. In our environments, performance, auditability, and uptime are critical requirements.

We are seeking a Software Engineer who thrives on performance-critical systems. In this role, your primary focus will be C++ development to maintain, extend, and optimize our highest-throughput core engines. You will also apply solid C# / .NET capabilities to connect these native components with our web services, APIs, and transactional databases.

Key Responsibilities

- Core Engine Engineering: Design, maintain, and optimize core, high-throughput application components and algorithms using C++.
- Web Services & Integration: Develop, extend, and support web services and API endpoints using C# and .NET MVC, bridging native backend modules with application logic.
- Database Optimization: Write, tune, and optimize SQL Server queries, data access patterns, and indexing strategies for high-performance transactional processing.
- Full-Stack Support: Troubleshoot and work across a mixed estate—spanning C++ native logic, C# backend services, and front-end interfaces (ranging from Vue.js applications to traditional server-rendered views).
- System Improvements: Safely make incremental enhancements to legacy codebases while maintaining system stability and jurisdiction-specific requirements.
- Production Troubleshooting:



Investigate and resolve production issues across the application stack (database, backend, and UI layers).
- Engineering Quality: Participate in code reviews, write unit/integration tests, support CI/CD pipeline steps, and collaborate closely with QA and Product teams.

What We’re Looking For

Core Technical Skills (Required)

- Primary — Core C++ Experience: 3+ years of hands-on professional C++ experience, with solid understanding of memory management, pointer manipulation, native debugging, and performance optimization.
- Secondary — Practical C# / .NET Skills: Working proficiency in C# and .NET MVC to maintain web applications, REST/SOAP services, and API integrations.
- Database Proficiency: Solid experience with SQL Server—writing efficient queries, understanding index design, and optimizing data retrieval.
- Experience Level: 3 to 6 years of professional software engineering experience working in production systems.
- Object-Oriented Design: Strong OOP principles with a practical commitment to writing clean, maintainable, and testable code.

Plus / Secondary Skills

- Front-End Versatility: Comfort working with modern front-end frameworks (e.g., Vue.js) or traditional server-side UI rendering techniques.
- Full-Stack Debugging: Ability to trace bugs across layers (from UI down to .NET APIs, native C++ binaries, and database tables).
- Environment Comfort: Comfort working with complex, legacy-integrated, or regulated environments.

Nice to Have

- Exposure to CI/CD workflows and automated release pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).
- Basic exposure to Azure cloud development or deployment.
- Awareness of OWASP secure coding guidelines.
- Experience with AI-assisted developer tooling (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code).
- Experience in government, public sector, or compliance-driven environments.
