Mechatronics Test Engineer

Job Objective:

Co-own hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and bench testing for the AURA platform, working at the boundary between hardware and software. AURA’s test strategy is simulation-first: every software layer runs against simulated hardware so tests execute on every commit without competing for scarce lab instruments. That strategy is only valid while the simulation stays behaviorally truthful to the physical system, and bench testing is what proves it.

Many AURA routines can be validated no other way — media and oil dispensing, off-gassing, droplet-bridge geometry, cryoprotectant timing, laser sperm immobilization, multi-day thermal hold, and crash and power-loss recovery. This role builds the physical test fixtures and writes the Python automation that drives them and gates releases.

Responsibilities:

- Co-own the HIL test suites for an assigned set of AURA instruments — driver conformance against real devices and the full-stack pre-release bench smoke test — integrated into CI as scheduled and pre-release jobs.
- Own the per-release bench cycle for those instruments:



validate the new capabilities each release delivers, verify shipped fixes against already-certified routines, and run the reliability tests that confirm repeatable performance over time.
- Design, build and maintain the physical test fixtures and instrumentation that make hardware test runs scripted, repeatable and safe, converting manual bench sessions into scheduled automation.
- Share ownership of simulation-vs-hardware parity: run the scheduled comparison cadence, treat every divergence as a first-class defect, and calibrate simulated-driver behavior models against measured hardware.
- Partner with the mechatronics team on instrument bring-up, reviewing device interfaces for testability, and contribute to the layered automated suites (pytest / pytest-asyncio, DDS test utilities, Playwright).

Requirements:

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical or Control Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
- 4 years of experience spanning both hardware and software — for example mechatronics engineering, test engineering, automation or robotics bring-up — including hands-on bring-up, instrumentation or testing of electromechanical systems (motion control and actuators, sensors, cameras, robotic arms or fluid-handling systems). Candidates strong on only one side of that boundary are not a fit for this role.
- Working proficiency in Python (pytest or comparable) sufficient to read application code and build test scripts, harnesses and utilities.
- Ability to build fixtures and instrumentation from datasheets and schematics and to operate lab hardware safely.
- Agile/Scrum experience with Git and Jira.
- Hardware-in-the-Loop testing: test rig configuration, driving real hardware from automated suites,



and validating software behavior against physical mechatronic components.
- Fixture design and instrumentation: building repeatable physical test setups, selecting sensors and measurement methods, and designing for scripted rather than manual execution.
- Motion control and device bring-up: actuators, drives, positioning and telemetry, including how such systems fail and how those failures are induced deliberately.
- Test automation in Python: writing maintainable automated tests and integrating them into CI/CD as scheduled and pre-release jobs.
- Parity and measurement analysis: comparing simulated against real behavior, judging what constitutes a meaningful divergence, and characterizing it well enough to be fixed.
- Prior HIL testing, work in a regulated or medical device environment, or familiarity with pub/sub middleware such as DDS is a strong plus.
- Full professional fluency in English and Spanish, and comfort working across US, UK, and Spain time zones.
