The World Bank Group is deepening its role as a global Knowledge Bank under the WBG Evolution agenda and Knowledge Compact, emphasizing the generation and application of high‑quality, practical knowledge to strengthen country programs. Smallholder supply chains—where climate resilience, food security, private‑sector engagement, and sustainable production converge—require insights grounded in real operations.
Millions of smallholders across emerging markets continue to face barriers related to market access, traceability, technology adoption, sustainability standards, and climate vulnerability. Addressing these constraints requires robust, practitioner‑driven knowledge and operational tools that can be shared across regions and embedded into both lending and advisory programs. Through this role, the IFC is supporting practical, scalable solutions relate to sustainability in smallholder supply chains, such as sustainable rice production, cooling and cold-chain systems, supply-chain traceability, and nature‑based services that promote productivity while reducing environmental impact.

This IFC ETC role contributes directly to the Knowledge Bank mandate by providing specialized technical leadership, generating practical knowledge products, and strengthening the operational knowledge base for smallholder sustainability interventions. The role supports cross‑WBG alignment, accelerates knowledge transfer between IFC, regional teams, and the broader World Bank, and ensures that emerging insights from ongoing operations are translated into high‑value knowledge products, guidance, and tools for staff and clients.Description of Role:
The ETC will serve as the technical lead on sustainability priorities in smallholder supply chains, working across regions and will shape knowledge as well as implement projects. The ETC will manage and contribute to the implementation of several ongoing projects and develop new ones based on clients’ needs, opportunities and alignment with WB Knowledge Bank’s strategic priorities. As the technical lead for sustainability related priorities in smallholder supply chains, the ETC will support and advise colleagues on relevant topics and develop new knowledge products as needed.



The ETC will report to the Global Platform Lead/TTL for the Smallholder Supply Chains project and work closely with vendors and colleagues on the Global platform team.Scope of Work/Responsibilities:
The ETC will be responsible for the following main areas of work as well as other priorities identified by the General Platform Lead/TTL:
Project Implementation:Manage ongoing Advisory projects with sustainability priorities, including managing relationships with clients and colleagues across the organization, and internal reporting• Ongoing Advisory projects include: Scaling Sustainable Rice Cultivation (609722), Sustainable Cooling Initiative (SCI) Agriculture Value Chains (609528) and Smallholder Supply Chains (610433)• Client relationships: ETC will support relationships with IFC clients and partners engaged in each project, including: Natural Offset Farming (NOF), JohnVents Nigeria, Associated British Foods (ABF), and Galaxy Rice• Vendor management: manage engagement with vendors and partners critical to project implementation, such as Rikolto, Glocal Impact, GreenCarbon, and other Japanese agribusiness companies operating in the rice sector• Donor fund stewardship and reporting, complying with donor rules, requirements and reporting• Reporting: prepare biannual reports, Project Status Reports (PSRs) and Project Completion Report (PCRs), including preparing and updating budgets; prepare other project-management documents, i.e. memos, as needed• Externally represent IFC in projects, as needed
Project Development:Lead and support the design of new sustainability-related Advisory projects• Concept Notes and Implementation Plans• Resource mobilization, from internal IFC donor funding• Collaboration with regional teams: Work with regional upstream/advisory colleagues and other colleagues to respond to client’s needs and support relationship management with clients
Technical & Knowledge Leadership:Technically lead sustainability-related priorities in smallholder supply chains• Define and lead the sustainability agenda in smallholder supply chains• Create and roll out knowledge products, in response to client/project needs• Lead and support learning events, cross-WBG knowledge alignment, including conferences• Serve as global SME for sustainable rice, sustainable cooling, traceability, and nature-based services in smallholder supply chains.
Team Support:Support team management and engagement as well as department priority initiatives• Support Platform Lead in operational planning and workflow coordination• Coordinate cross‑departmental collaboration (e.g., Climate, AgriConnect, FIG Agri, DE4A)• Contribute to department priorities as well as corporate initiatives (gender, climate, digital, nature)• Contribute to corporate and donor reporting, vendor recruitments
DeliverablesProject Implementation Deliverables
• Timely completion of required project reports, including Project Status Reports (PSRs), and Project Completion Reports (PCRs).• Periodic client and partner engagement summaries documenting progress, risks, and next steps.• Vendor and partner management notes, including performance assessments and recommendations.• Other internal documentation required for project management.




Project Development Deliverables• Draft Concept Notes and Implementation Plans for new sustainability-related Advisory projects.• Documentation supporting resource mobilization efforts, including inputs for donor proposals.• Technical inputs for client meetings and presentations, as requested by regional teams or other colleagues
Technical & Knowledge Leadership Deliverables• At least one knowledge product (e.g., guidance note, operational toolkit, case study, technical brief)• Technical advisory notes or presentations for cross-WBG knowledge alignment and learning events.• Key contributions to at least two internal or external knowledge-sharing events.
Team Support & Corporate Engagement Deliverables• Inputs into annual planning, workflow coordination, and portfolio reporting.• Contributions to cross-departmental collaboration efforts.• Plan and coordinate team meetings and generate summaries of agreed next steps

Selection Criteria

• Advanced degree in economics, agribusiness management, business administration, or related field and a minimum of ten years’ direct relevant experience.• Working experience with agricultural value chains and agribusinesses who are IFC clients and partners. Hands-on experience working with grass-root institutions and farmer organizations. Experience in emerging markets, especially Africa, is a plus.• Experience in coordinating and implementing smallholder supply chain development projects.• Technical experience in cool/cold chains technology, traceability, and sustainable rice in smallholder supply chains. Familiarity with nature-based solutions a plus.• Demonstrated experience designing and obtaining project approvals and mobilizing donor funding• Ability to work across IFC and WB advisory teams (important for Knowledge Bank alignment)• Excellent writing and communications skills. Fluency in written and spoken English is required, and other languages are a plus.• Excellent conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to work on both macro and micro issues and a track record of excellence in analytical work.• Competence in project management including preparation of project reports, budgets and project related communication materials.• Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and independently on a range of assignments, and to work under pressure to produce high-quality output in response to tight deadlines.• Ability to function effectively in multi-disciplinary teams and to work sensitively in multi-cultural environments.• Strong leadership, team building and organizational skills.• Ability to meet expectations on quality, time, and budget.
