About VelaFi
VelaFi is a global financial technology company specializing in B2B cross-border payments, stablecoin settlement, and treasury solutions. We provide compliant, secure, and efficient payment infrastructure connecting businesses across Latin America, the United States, and other global markets.
As our business in Mexico continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced, commercially minded Compliance Officer to lead local compliance operations, support regulatory registrations and maintain a compliance framework that enables responsible and sustainable growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day compliance for VelaFi’s operations in Mexico, ensuring adherence to applicable payments, money transmission, fintech, AML/CFT, data protection, and virtual-asset requirements.
- Develop and continuously improve local compliance policies, procedures, risk assessments, and internal controls in alignment with VelaFi’s general compliance framework.
- Oversee AML/CFT, KYC, KYB, KYT, beneficial ownership identification, customer risk rating, sanctions screening, PEP and adverse-media screening, transaction monitoring, investigations, and case escalation.
- Assess the business models, transaction structures, and fund flows of customers operating in cross-border payments, corporate collections and payouts, foreign exchange, stablecoin settlement, and higher-risk industries.
- Evaluate on-chain risks, including wallet exposure, source and destination of funds, sanctions exposure, high-risk services, unusual transaction patterns, and other financial-crime indicators.
- Support applications, maintenance, renewals, regulatory reporting, audits, and examinations related to applicable Mexican authorizations and registrations.
- Monitor regulatory developments affecting payments, fintech, stablecoins, and virtual assets in Mexico, translating new requirements into practical business processes and controls.
- Partner with Product, Operations, Sales, Treasury, Legal, Risk, and Global Compliance teams to assess risk before launching new products, payment corridors, or customer segments.
- Develop compliance metrics and management reporting, ensuring material risks and control gaps are identified,
escalated, and remediated.
- Use AI and automation responsibly to improve regulatory research, customer reviews, investigations, quality assurance, reporting, and overall compliance efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Risk Management, or a related field.
- At least five years of compliance experience within Mexico’s banking, payments, fintech, remittance, foreign-exchange, digital-assets, or broader financial-services sector.
- Strong knowledge of Mexican AML/CFT requirements, customer due diligence, beneficial ownership, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, regulatory reporting, and financial-crime risk management.
- Practical experience with Mexican regulatory frameworks, including Transmisor de Dinero registration, ITF and IFPE authorization, and virtual-asset-related registration and compliance obligations. Candidates should understand the associated application, maintenance, renewal, reporting, audit, and examination processes.
- Experience engaging with relevant Mexican authorities, including CNBV, SHCP, UIF, SAT, Banco de México, and CONDUSEF.
- Strong understanding of stablecoins, blockchain networks, digital wallets, on-chain fund flows, and financial-crime risks involving digital assets.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, risk assessments, and controls—not merely interpret regulations or review documents.
- Fluency in Spanish and professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Strong independent judgment, commercial awareness, execution skills, and cross-functional collaboration capabilities, with the ability to support business growth while maintaining effective risk controls.
Technology and Tools Experience with relevant compliance capabilities and tools, including:
- KYC/KYB and identity verification: Sumsub or similar platforms;
- KYT,
wallet screening, and on-chain analytics: Chainalysis, TRM Labs, Elliptic, or similar platforms;
- Sanctions, PEP, and adverse-media screening: ComplyAdvantage, World-Check, or similar platforms;
- Fiat transaction monitoring and case management: Flagright, Unit21, or similar platforms.
Candidates should also be able to use modern AI tools securely and effectively for regulatory analysis, policy and control mapping, customer due diligence, alert investigations, data analysis, workflow automation, and management reporting. A strong understanding of confidentiality, data protection, output validation, auditability, model limitations, and appropriate human oversight is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
- CAMS or another relevant Mexican or international AML/compliance certification.
- Experience building a local compliance function, supporting market entry, or launching new financial products in Mexico.
- Combined experience across traditional payments, cross-border payments, stablecoins, and on-chain compliance.
- A proactive approach to adopting AI, automation, and emerging compliance technologies to improve quality, speed, and scalability.
Who We Are Looking For We are not looking for someone who only reviews documents or cites regulations. We are looking for a hands-on compliance professional who understands the business, identifies the real risks, designs practical controls, and drives issues through resolution.
The ideal candidate combines regulatory expertise, commercial awareness, technological fluency, and strong execution. This person should be able to use AI, automation, and blockchain analytics to build a modern compliance framework that is both robust and supportive of responsible business growth.
