In this position...
You will shape how drivers interact with vehicles by leading the end-to-end design, integration, and delivery of advanced transmission shift systems—ranging from tactile mechanical shifters to modern electronic shift-by-wire controls. Serving as the primary technical bridge across styling, human-machine interface (HMI), hardware, software, and global manufacturing, you will drive product quality, functional safety, and premium driver craftsmanship from initial concept through vehicle launch.
Responsibilities
What you'll do...
- Lead End-to-End Commodity Delivery: Own the packaging, mechanical/electronic design integration, and technical release of transmission shifting systems throughout the complete product lifecycle.
- Define Technical & Ergonomic Specifications: Establish clear functional requirements, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T;) stack-ups, tactile sound and feel attributes, and interface guidelines in alignment with HMI and Styling Studio teams.
- Drive Systems & Software Integration: Partner with vehicle electrical and network architecture teams to integrate Controller Area Network (CAN) messaging, control modules, wiring schematics, and digital vehicle interfaces.
- Ensure Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Lead engineering risk assessments (DFMEA)
and design verification plans (DVP&R;) to exceed functional safety, durability, and global regulatory standards.
- Manage Supplier Partnerships: Direct external Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers on engineering deliverables, production part approval processes (PPAP), tooling timelines, and prototype/production builds.
- Execute Rapid Issue Resolution & Continuous Improvement: Resolve technical integration challenges during virtual and physical prototype builds using structured problem-solving methodologies, change management workflows, and issue-tracking platforms.
Qualifications
You'll have...
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Typically 2 or more years of automotive engineering experience focusing on mechatronic, electromechanical, interior switch, or transmission control components across development and launch phases.
- Working knowledge of vehicle electrical architectures, CAN bus communication, injection-molded plastic design, and tactile/haptic user interface craftsmanship.
- Practical proficiency with 3D CAD platforms (such as CATIA) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) / Engineering Change Management systems.
- Practical understanding of automotive quality tools and validation methodologies, including DFMEA, DVP&R;, and structured problem-solving (e.g., 8D, 5-Whys).
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills to effectively align with global design, manufacturing, and supplier partners.
Even better, you may have...
- Master’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or related).
- Direct experience in electronic module design/release, illuminated interior components, or shift-by-wire electromechanical systems.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
- Deep familiarity with the automotive PPAP process and manufacturing plant quality documentation (PFMEA, Control Plans, Line Flow Charts).
- Hands-on testing experience (bench, dynamometer, or vehicle-level) and familiarity with EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) validation.
- Working knowledge of commercially available productivity and issue-tracking tools (such as Jira) to streamline engineering workflow.
