At Walmart, we’re looking for a Distinguished Software Engineer to provide deep technical leadership across multiple platforms and engineering teams, helping us build scalable, reliable, and customer-centric solutions for one of the world’s largest retailers.

What will you do?

- Provide technical and architectural leadership across complex systems, platforms, and engineering teams.
- Drive system-level execution, ensuring technical strategy translates into scalable and reliable solutions.
- Shape architecture and technical direction for business-critical platforms and services.
- Identify and solve complex challenges related to scalability, reliability, performance, integration, and system design.
- Partner with engineering, product, data, AI/ML, and business leaders to translate business challenges into technical solutions.
- Influence technical decisions and establish engineering standards across multiple teams.
- Mentor and develop senior engineers, strengthening technical capabilities across the organization.
- Drive continuous improvement across architecture, engineering practices, development lifecycle, and operational excellence.
- Help build and integrate AI/ML-enabled software solutions that solve customer and associate problems at scale.

What are we looking for?

- Deep expertise designing and evolving large-scale, distributed software systems.
- Strong experience with system architecture, APIs, cloud platforms, microservices, integration, and modern engineering practices.




- Proven ability to make complex technical decisions and navigate architectural trade-offs.
- Experience improving scalability, reliability, performance, and resilience of business-critical systems.
- Ability to influence technical direction across multiple engineering teams without relying on formal authority.
- Strong systems-thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and raising engineering standards across an organization.
- Ability to connect business strategy with technical architecture and execution.
- Experience building or integrating AI/ML capabilities into software solutions is highly valued.

Technical background

Experience across one or more of the following areas:

- Backend: Java, Python, C++, C#, Go, Rust
- Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript
- Mobile: Swift, Objective-C, Dart, JavaScript, C#, C++, Java
- Distributed systems and microservices
- Cloud architecture and platform engineering
- APIs and systems integration
- Observability, reliability, performance, and scalability
- AI/ML integrations and Generative AI
- CI/CD and modern software development practices

Experience

- Extensive experience in software engineering and architecture, including significant ownership of complex, large-scale systems.
- Proven experience influencing architecture and engineering execution across multiple teams or platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to lead highly complex technical initiatives from strategy through implementation.




- Experience operating as a senior technical leader, Principal Engineer, Distinguished Engineer, Architect, Engineering Director, or equivalent technical scope.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with engineers, senior technology leaders, and business stakeholders.
