Position summary
The Electrical Product Line Engineer is responsible for the technical ownership, standardization, configuration management, and continuous improvement of the company's electrical product portfolio. This position ensures that all standard and custom electrical product configurations meet customer requirements, industry standards, manufacturing capabilities, and company design guidelines.
The role serves as the primary technical authority for electrical product specifications, electrical parts libraries, and customer specification reviews. The engineer evaluates project requirements, identifies deviations, prepares technical comments, and supports Sales, Project Management, Sourcing, Manufacturing, and Quality teams throughout the product lifecycle.
Key responsibilities
Product Configuration Management
Develop, maintain, and control standard electrical product configurations.
Review and approve custom product configurations to meet project-specific requirements.
Ensure configuration consistency across engineering, manufacturing, ERP, and documentation systems.
Create and maintain electrical product configuration rules and selection guides.
Lead standardization initiatives to reduce complexity and improve operational efficiency.
Electrical Parts Library Management
Own and maintain the electrical parts database/library.
Establish approved manufacturer and vendor lists.
Review and qualify new electrical components for inclusion in the library.
Manage part numbering standards, descriptions, attributes, and technical documentation.
Collaborate with Sourcing and Supply Chain teams on alternative parts and obsolescence management.
Ensure compliance with applicable electrical standards and customer specifications.
Specification Review and Compliance
Perform detailed reviews of customer specifications, project requirements, and bid documents.
Identify gaps, exceptions, risks, and compliance issues.
Prepare formal technical comments, clarifications, and deviations.
Support proposal development by defining compliant and alternative technical solutions.
Interpret applicable electrical codes, standards, and customer requirements.
Provide technical recommendations to improve compliance and cost effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Cross-Functional Support
Support Sales and Inside Sales during quotation and proposal stages.
Collaborate with Project Managers on project execution requirements.
Support manufacturing with technical guidance related to electrical systems and components.
Provide technical input to Quality, Procurement, and Field Service teams.
Participate in customer meetings and technical clarification sessions.
Product Lifecycle Management
Drive continuous improvement and cost reduction initiatives.
Manage engineering change requests and product revisions.
Evaluate supplier technical changes and component substitutions.
Monitor product performance and recommend improvements.
Support root cause analysis and corrective actions related to electrical products.
Documentation and Standards
Maintain electrical standards, design guidelines,
and engineering procedures.
Ensure BOM accuracy and configuration control.
Create and update technical documentation, drawings, specifications, and manuals.
Support ERP, PLM, and engineering database integrity.
Technical Skills
Strong understanding of electrical components and systems. Ability to interpret electrical schematics and technical specifications. Knowledge of electrical codes and standards such as:
NEC
NFPA
UL
IEC
IEEE
NEMA
Experience with ERP, and CAD systems. BOM management and configuration control experience. Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
Soft Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong attention to detail. Customer-focused mindset. Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
Experience
3+ years of experience in electrical engineering, product engineering, applications engineering, or product line management. Experience managing configurable products and engineered-to-order solutions. Experience reviewing customer specifications and preparing technical deviations. Experience with industrial electrical systems, control panels, power distribution equipment, or packaged industrial systems.
