Cost and Bid Estimator – Structural and Miscellaneous Metals

- Location: Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico

Department: Estimating and PreconstructionAbout Us We are a California-based fabricator and installer specializing in ornamental and structural metalwork for new residential and commercial construction. Our projects include stairs, railings, gates, fences, canopies, structural steel, and custom architectural metal features for multifamily and single-family developments.

We are looking for a detail-oriented Cost and Bid Estimator who can help us pursue the right projects at the right price.

About the Role The Cost and Bid Estimator will bridge architectural and structural plans with profitable project execution. Based in Tijuana and working closely with our California team, this position will perform quantity takeoffs, calculate labor and material costs, and prepare comprehensive bid proposals for structural steel, ornamental iron, and miscellaneous metals projects.

Key Responsibilities

- Quantity Takeoffs and Cost Modeling: Perform comprehensive quantity takeoffs from architectural and structural drawings using Bluebeam Revu, On-Screen Takeoff, PlanSwift, or similar software.
- Labor and Material Pricing: Estimate shop fabrication and field installation hours, material quantities and yields, equipment requirements, and related project costs. Materials may include carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass, and specialty hardware.
- Surface Finish Estimating: Calculate costs associated with galvanizing, powder coating, shop primer, painting, and other specialty finishes.




- Bid Proposals and Scope Letters: Prepare competitive and comprehensive proposals, including scope inclusions, exclusions, clarifications, RFIs, alternates, and value-engineering recommendations for general contractors and project stakeholders.
- Code and Standards Compliance: Ensure bid scopes reflect applicable California Building Code requirements, including egress and accessibility provisions under Chapter 11B, as well as relevant AISC standards and AWS D1.1/D1.2 welding requirements.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with detailing, purchasing, production management, quality, and field installation teams to compare historical production rates with current bid assumptions.
- Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination: Solicit, review, compare, and negotiate quotations for materials, hardware, outsourced processing, specialty finishes, equipment, and subcontracted work.
- Estimate Review and Handoff: Maintain complete estimate documentation and support project handoff meetings by clearly communicating assumptions, exclusions, risks, pricing, and production requirements.

Qualifications and Requirements

- Experience: At least four years of proven estimating experience in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, ornamental iron, or custom architectural metalwork under United States construction standards.




- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field. Equivalent hands-on industry experience may also be considered.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced proficiency with digital takeoff software, preferably Bluebeam Revu, as well as Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas, pricing models, and cost databases.
- CAD Knowledge: Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar drafting and modeling software.
- Codes and Standards: Strong working knowledge of the California Building Code, Title 24, AISC standards, and the cost and quality implications of AWS requirements.
- Language: Advanced professional English, both written and spoken, is required for daily technical communication with project managers, general contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders in the United States.
- Professional Skills: Strong analytical ability, attention to detail, commercial judgment, organization, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines and bid packages.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience estimating both shop fabrication and field installation labor, equipment, and logistics.
- Familiarity with cross-border operations, transportation, customs, and freight costs between Mexico and California.
- Experience with model-based takeoffs or structural modeling software.
- Knowledge of residential, multifamily, and commercial construction projects in California.
- Experience developing value-engineering alternatives and identifying potential scope gaps or project risks.

Job Type: Full-time Pay: From $30,000.00 per month
