Job Description
The Field Quality Engineer leads rapid technical triage, advanced vehicle diagnostics, and root cause identification for complex or repeat customer concerns across ICE, Hybrid, and BEV platforms. The role is accountable for reducing Vehicle Off Road (VOR) time, improving Fixed Right First Repair performance, and converting field issues into clear corrective actions.
Core Responsibilities
Lead technical triage for vehicles with complex, intermittent, repeat, or high-risk customer concerns.
Diagnose propulsion, electrical, software, communication network, charging, drivability, and module-related issues.
Perform structured root cause analysis using DTCs, freeze-frame data, vehicle logs, scan tool data, network traces, wiring schematics, and service history.
Drive actions that reduce Vehicle Off Road (VOR) duration and support buyback mitigation through fast, accurate diagnosis.
Validate repairs, software updates, calibrations, parts replacement, and post-repair performance before vehicle release.
Collaborate with dealership, technical assistance, engineering, service, quality, and parts teams to close escalations quickly.
Document customer condition, fault isolation steps, root cause, corrective action, and repair validation in a clear technical format.
Identify repeat repair and field trend patterns that impact Fixed Right First Repair performance.
Role Priorities
1. Triage: Prioritize vehicle concerns, identify failure mode, and define immediate diagnostic path.
2. Root Cause: Use DTCs, logs, network captures, schematics, and service history to isolate true cause.
3. VOR Reduction: Drive rapid repair validation, escalation closure, and repeat repair prevention.
Requirements
5+ Years of experience
Advanced vehicle diagnostic capability across ICE,
Hybrid, and BEV systems.
Strong triage discipline with the ability to quickly separate symptom, system, failure mode, and likely root cause.
Proven root cause analysis and fault isolation skillset for electrical, software, module communication, propulsion, charging, and drivability concerns.
Proficiency with OEM diagnostic software, scan tools, data logging, service information, wiring schematics, and repair validation methods.
Working knowledge of CAN, LIN, Ethernet, Powernet, and Atlantis High/Mid communication architectures.
Ability to convert technical findings into concise repair direction, escalation notes, and corrective action recommendations.
Strong communication skills with dealership technicians, service advisors, engineering, and quality teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience in Automotive Technology, Electrical Systems, or related field.
Five or more years of automotive diagnostics, field quality, technical assistance, dealership troubleshooting, or equivalent experience.
ASE Master Certification, OEM technical certification, or advanced electrical/diagnostic training preferred.
Experience supporting field investigations, warranty reduction, repeat repair reduction, FRFR improvement, or VOR reduction initiatives.
Success metrics:
Vehicle Off Road (VOR) Time
Reduced diagnosis and repair cycle time
Improved first repair effectiveness and lower repeat concerns
Time to Root Cause
Faster fault isolation and escalation closure
Reduced recurring failures and customer dissatisfaction
Technical Documentation Quality
Clear repair direction, validation evidence, and permanent corrective action input
