The Role The Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for the detailed design, implementation, and verification of hardware components in line with defined requirements, architecture, and quality standards. You ensure hardware design elements — such as PCB layouts and bills of material — are developed to project specifications, architectural guidelines, and technical processes. You contribute actively to robust, reliable, and cost-effective hardware solutions, perform integration and testing activities, and provide transparent documentation of results and design decisions.
What You’ll Do (Impact Areas) Design hardware: create detailed HW requirements from HW architecture requirements, and develop detailed hardware designs — including design for environment, EMC, and voltage-compatibility conditions.
Create layouts & BOMs: create PCB layouts and bills of material, ensuring compliance with design rules and guidelines.
Validate the design: perform simulations, calculations, and design analyses to validate feasibility and performance, and perform design failure and safety analyses (DFMEA, FTA, FMEDA, and reliability prediction).
Integrate & verify: perform hardware integration, bring-up, and verification activities including laboratory measurements, and conduct verification reviews on circuit designs, PCB layouts, and bills of material, incorporating feedback.
Document & ensure traceability: create and maintain documentation (design specifications, interface descriptions, change requests, design review material), and ensure traceability of design work to requirements and architecture.
Collaborate & mitigate risk: collaborate across systems, software, mechanics, test, and production to ensure design compatibility, and identify and report technical risks or issues with proposed improvement or mitigation measures.
Decision Authority Implement and modify hardware designs within the defined architecture and project scope.
Provide input and propose design alternatives for technical decisions during development.
Approve own work products before internal review, and submit for official approval by the HW Lead Engineer or HW Architect.
Escalate identified risks, issues, or constraints to the HW Lead Engineer or HW Architect.
Suggest design improvements and optimization opportunities for cost, performance, and manufacturability.
What Success Looks Like Detailed hardware designs, PCB layouts, and BOMs that meet requirements, architecture, design rules, and quality standards.
Validated, robust, reliable, and cost-effective designs backed by simulation and safety analyses (DFMEA, FTA, FMEDA).
Successful hardware integration, bring-up, and verification with clear laboratory evidence.
Transparent, traceable documentation linking every design decision back to requirements and architecture.
Core Competencies Detailed hardware design: PCB layout and bills of material to design rules and guidelines.
Design for EMC, environment, and voltage compatibility.
Simulation, calculation, and design analysis, plus safety / reliability analyses (DFMEA, FTA, FMEDA, reliability prediction).
Hardware integration, bring-up, and laboratory verification.
Cross-domain collaboration and traceability discipline.
What You Bring (Qualifications) A hardware design engineering background with hands-on PCB layout and BOM creation.
Knowledge of design for EMC, environment, and voltage compatibility.
Experience with simulations / design analyses and safety / reliability methods (DFMEA, FTA, FMEDA).
Hardware integration, bring-up, and laboratory verification experience.
Strong documentation and cross-domain collaboration skills.
Note: Formal qualifications and competency levels for this role are defined in the Clarios Qualification / Skills Matrix (PSE-HTR-FR-06).
