Job description
Automotive Interior Trim Product Development Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Automotive Interior Trim Product Development Engineer with handson experience in the development of automotive interior components.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing new product development activities from customer requirements and product concept through design validation, tooling, prototype development, testing, and production launch.
This position will work closely with customers, suppliers, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and engineering teams to ensure that new products meet customer requirements for design, quality, cost, timing, and manufacturability.
Experience with GM, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Stellantis, or other North American OEMs is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
A. Product Development
Lead automotive interior trim product development projects from RFQ through SOP.
Review and understand customer drawings, specifications, technical requirements, and packaging requirements.
Participate in product concept development and design reviews.
Review product feasibility and identify potential design manufacturing risks.
Coordinate DFM DFA activities with design and manufacturing teams.
Manage prototype and sample development activities.
Support product design changes and engineering changes.
Prepare and maintain APQP and PPAP documentation.
Support customer design reviews and technical meetings.

B. Automotive Interior Trim Expertise
Develop and maintain technical knowledge related to
Interior decorative trim
Instrument panel components
Door trim door garnish
Console components
Pillar trim
Garnish and appliqué parts
Decorative panels
Woodgrain real wood trim
Carbon fiber appearance parts
Painted decorative parts
PVD plated coated decorative parts
PC ABS and other engineering plastics
Softtouch and decorative materials
Experience with surface appearance, color, gloss, texture,
grain, scratch resistance, abrasion resistance, UV resistance, and chemical resistance is highly desirable.
C. Tooling Manufacturing
Review tooling concepts and provide engineering input.
Coordinate with mold tooling suppliers.
Support injection molding, painting, coating, printing, lamination, assembly, and other related processes.
Identify potential manufacturing issues during product development.
Support tooling trials and engineering builds.
Participate in prototype, pilot, and massproduction builds.
Support rootcause analysis and corrective actions for development issues.
D. Customer Supplier Management
Act as a technical interface with OEM customers and Tier1 customers.
Coordinate technical discussions with customer engineering teams.
Review and respond to customer engineering requests.
Manage technical communication with tooling, material, and process suppliers.
Follow up on project timing, open issues, and action items.
Support quotation RFQ activities from a technical perspective.
E. Validation Testing
Develop and manage product validation plans.
Coordinate laboratory and customer testing.
Review test specifications and test results.
Support testing
Analyze test failures and coordinate corrective actions.
F. Launch Mass Production
Support APQP activities from prototype through SOP.
Coordinate engineering builds and pilot production.
Support PFMEA and Control Plan development.
Verify product and process readiness before SOP.
Support production rampup and early production issues.
Transfer product knowledge from Engineering to Manufacturing and Quality.
Experience
37 years of experience in automotive product development,
preferably in interior trim.
Handson experience with automotive interior components.
Experience working with OEM or Tier1 customers.
Experience with APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and engineering change processes.
Experience coordinating multiple functions and suppliers.
Technical Skills
Understanding of automotive interior component development.
Understanding of plastic injection molding and secondary processes.
Knowledge of surface treatment decorative processes is preferred.
Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and specifications.
Basic understanding of GDT.
Knowledge of automotive validation testing requirements.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
CAD experience such as CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with GM, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Stellantis, Toyota, or other North American OEM programs.
Experience with automotive decorative trim.
Experience with painting, coating, PVD, printing, lamination, or other decorative processes.
Experience with plastic injection molded parts.
Experience with PPAP and customerspecific requirements.
Experience working in a Tier1 automotive supplier.
Experience working in Mexico automotive manufacturing.
Experience with international suppliers and Korean companies is a plus.
Language Requirements
SpanishBusiness communication level required.
English Intermediate to Advanced level required.
Ability to communicate with customers and suppliers in English.
Ability to participate in technical meetings.
Ability to prepare technical reports and presentations in English.
