the trade compliance auditor is responsible for conducting specialized audits related to certificates of origin and trade agreement compliance for export operations.
principal responsibilities
- conduct specialized audits of certificates of origin issued under:
- united states-mexico-canada agreement (usmca)
- mexico-european union free trade agreement (tlcuem)
- mexico-chile free trade agreement
- verify compliance of finished products intended for export with the applicable rules of origin and provisions established under each trade agreement.
- review, analyze, and validate certificates of origin provided by suppliers, ensuring proper completion, accuracy, authenticity, and regulatory compliance.
- assess supporting documentation, including bills of materials, supplier declarations, cost analyses, and manufacturing records, to substantiate origin claims.
- identify and investigate discrepancies, non-conformities, or compliance risks related to origin qualifications and trade agreement requirements.
- ensure adherence to customs regulations and trade compliance policies while maintaining accurate audit records and documentation.
- monitor regulatory updates, amendments, and changes to trade agreements affecting import and export operations, and evaluate their impact on business processes.
- provide recommendations and corrective actions to address compliance gaps and strengthen internal controls.
- collaborate with procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, logistics, customs, and legal teams to ensure ongoing compliance with trade regulations.
- support internal and external audits conducted by customs authorities, customers, and certification agencies when required.
- prepare audit reports, present findings, and communicate compliance risks and improvement opportunities to management.
requirements:
- bachelor's degree in international business, international trade or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in trade compliance, customs compliance, international trade, or related auditing functions.
- experience working with free trade agreements, rules of origin, and certificates of origin.
- experience conducting compliance reviews, audits, or regulatory assessments.
- advanced english proficiency (written and verbal).
- knowledge of usmca, tlcuem, and mexico-chile free trade agreement requirements.
- understanding of rules of origin, customs regulations, and preferential tariff programs.
- ability to interpret trade regulations and apply them to manufacturing and supply chain environments.
- strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- effective communication and report-writing skills.
- proficiency in microsoft office applications, particularly excel.
- ability to manage multiple audits and deadlines simultaneously.
preferred qualifications
- customs broker certification or equivalent trade compliance certification.
- knowledge of mexgaap, usgaap, or ifrs implications related to trade compliance documentation and audit controls is a plus.
