Purpose
Reporting to the Field Crew Coordinator a Crew Chief is responsible for the successful execution of surveying and geomatics projects. The Crew Chief plays a key role in managing daily field operations, providing guidance to team members, ensuring data accuracy, and overseeing the use of geomatics equipment (such as Total Stations, GPS, and other survey instruments). This position requires strong leadership skills, technical expertise in geomatics, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the execution of various types of surveys, including construction, topographic, boundary, and legalsurveys.
Ensure field data is collected accurately, including measurements, elevations, and locations, using advanced surveying instruments such as Total Stations, GPS, Laser Scanners and drones.
Liaise with Project Managers and field supervisors to coordinate field survey work, to review and manage project, timeline requirements, priorities and survey methodology.
Act as a company representative, liaising directly with client field representatives and landowners.
Prepare and communicate field notes, sketches, checklists and digital data in required formats for Project Managers, Land Surveyors and Drafting personnel and submit field data and returns daily or as directed.
Address any issues or concerns raised by clients or stakeholders on-site.
Ensure that all surveying equipment is in good working condition and properly calibrated.
Manage equipment inventory and ensure timely repairs or replacements as needed.
Actively participate in and proactively support the advancement of the GeoVerra safety program.
Maintain accurate field notes, daily logs, and project reports. This is a repeat of above
Travel to various project sites as needed, to oversee and perform surveying tasks.
Complete and submit timesheets daily.
Required Skills and Behaviours
A diploma or degree in Geomatics, Surveying, or a related field.
5 to 10 years of experience in surveying or crew chief role, with a strong understanding of surveying practices, including boundary, topographic, and construction surveys.
Proficiency with surveying equipment (GPS, Total Stations, Laser Scanners, etc.) with an emphasis on Trimble Equipment and software (R12i Functionality, Trimble Access)
Ability to ensuring that all tasks are performed efficiently and safely.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce accurate field notes and reports.
Strong problem-solving skills in a field environment; Ability to address challenges encountered in the field and make real-time decisions.
An aptitude for delivering projects on time and budget.
Comfortable working in outdoor environments in various weather conditions and terrain.
Experience with the use of ATVs/UTVs, snowmobiles and chainsaws would be considered an asset.
Completed training and valid certificates for Standard First Aid and (Construction Safety Training System) CSTStraining is required.
