Colossal Academy is looking for an exceptional **Reading Coach** who can help children become strong, confident and independent readers.
We are a small, innovative international school in Mérida inspired by the **International Baccalaureate (IB) and Reggio Emilia** approaches. Our philosophy combines **academic rigor with a deeply human approach to education**.
The Role
The Reading Coach works with students individually and in small groups to develop the foundational skills necessary for successful reading.
This is a highly personalized role. The coach will identify where each child is in their reading development, determine what is preventing progress and provide targeted instruction to help the student move forward.
Our approach combines **systematic literacy instruction with meaningful reading experiences**. Children need explicit instruction in how written language works, but they also need to experience reading as something joyful, useful and connected to their lives.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing individual and small-group reading instruction
- Assessing students' reading development and identifying specific areas for growth
- Developing phonological and phonemic awareness
- Teaching phonics and decoding strategies systematically
- Building reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension
- Supporting early writing and spelling development
- Selecting texts at appropriate levels of challenge
- Monitoring progress and adjusting instruction based on evidence
- Supporting students who need intervention as well as students ready for greater challenge
- Helping children develop confidence and a positive identity as readers
- Collaborating with classroom teachers to support individual learning goals
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a strong understanding of **how children learn to read**:
- Understands phonemic awareness,



phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension
- Can identify specific gaps in a child's reading development
- Is comfortable providing structured, explicit instruction when needed
- Can personalize instruction rather than teaching every child in exactly the same way
- Uses assessment and observation to make instructional decisions
- Is patient, encouraging and able to build children's confidence
- Maintains high expectations while providing appropriate support
- Understands that reading difficulties should be addressed systematically rather than simply asking a child to “practice more”
- Communicates effectively with teachers and families
- Is organized and able to document individual student progress
Experience with **structured literacy, Science of Reading, phonics-based instruction, literacy intervention, IB or Reggio Emilia** is highly valued.
