About us
Phase One Ventures is an AI-native venture studio. We start companies from scratch, build them with small teams, and move fast enough that the first version of a product is usually in front of real users within weeks.
The role
You will own product design end to end for products that do not exist yet. That means starting with user interviews and a fuzzy problem, and finishing with flows, prototypes, and specs that engineering can ship.
You will work directly with founders and engineers, usually on more than one product at a time. There is no established playbook to inherit for these products. You will be the person defining what gets built and why.
What you'll do
- Define the product. Information architecture, user flows, state coverage, edge cases, and the unglamorous parts most people skip.
- Run discovery. Conduct user interviews, sit in on customer calls, and synthesize raw conversation into problem statements the team can act on.
- Prototype fast. Use Figma and Claude Design to get from idea to something clickable in days, not weeks.
- Validate. Put prototypes in front of real users, run structured feedback loops, and kill the ideas that do not hold up.
- Partner with engineering. Write clear specs, cover empty, loading, and error states, and stay involved through implementation.
- Build the feedback habit. Maintain an ongoing research pipeline instead of running one-off studies when someone asks.
- Collaborate with our visual designers, who own look and feel and the design system, so the surface stays consistent while you focus on product logic.
What we're looking for
- 4+ years designing digital products, including at least one you took from nothing to launch.
- Strong Figma fundamentals: components, auto layout, variables, and interactive prototyping.
- Hands-on experience with Claude Design or comparable AI design tools for generating and iterating on interfaces.
- Real user research experience. You have run the interviews yourself, not just read the summaries.
- Comfort with ambiguity. You can walk into an undefined problem space and come back with a defensible direction.
- A portfolio with at least one case study covering the full arc: what you learned from users, the decision you made, what shipped, and what happened after.
- Professional working proficiency in English. Our team spans the US and Mexico.
Nice to have
- Startup or venture studio experience, especially juggling multiple products at once.
- Familiarity with product analytics (PostHog, Amplitude, Mixpanel) and reading behavioral data alongside qualitative feedback.
- Mobile design experience, particularly iOS, in addition to web.
- Light prototyping in code, or enough comfort to read a codebase and understand what is feasible.
What this role is not
- This is not a pure UI position. We already have designers who own visual craft and the design system. We are hiring the person who figures out what to build and why, then makes it concrete enough to ship. If your strongest work is polish on an existing product, this is probably not the right fit.
