About This Role
Mental health counselors work with individuals, couples, and groups to address emotional and psychological challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and substance use. A typical day involves meeting with several clients in scheduled sessions, each lasting about 50 minutes, where they listen carefully, ask questions, and guide conversations using evidence-based approaches to help clients understand patterns in their thinking and behaviour. Between sessions they write detailed notes, update treatment plans,
and coordinate with other providers such as psychiatrists or social workers when a client needs additional support.
A Day in the Life

Prep and emails
Review session notes from the previous day, complete any outstanding documentation, and confirm the day's appointments.
9:00 AM
Intake session
Meet a new client for the first time, gather their history, assess symptoms, and begin building a treatment plan together.
10:00 AM
Individual therapy
Work through anxiety triggers with a returning client, reviewing coping strategies they practised during the week.
