The Role:
New Fortress Energy is seeking an Instrumentation & Control Lead to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of automation, process control, and safety systems across our Fast LNG portfolio. This role will serve as the technical authority for all instrumentation, distributed control systems (DCS), safety instrumented systems (SIS), emergency shutdown (ESD), fire and gas (F&G;) systems, process analyzers, and field instrumentation. The position will focus on improving system reliability, maintaining functional safety, optimizing process control strategies, and ensuring the integrity of all instrumentation and automation systems throughout the facility.
The successful candidate will work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Technical Services teams to ensure instrumentation and control systems are designed, maintained, and operated to maximize plant reliability, process stability, and personnel safety while driving continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.
What you will do:
- Serve as the technical authority for all instrumentation, control systems, safety systems, and automation equipment across the FLNG facility.
- Support the reliability and lifecycle management of ABB DCS, PLCs, SIS/ESD, Fire & Gas (F&G;), analyzers, and field instrumentation.
- Develop and implement control system reliability strategies that maximize plant availability and production.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex instrumentation, process control, and automation issues.
- Develop and maintain cause-and-effect matrices, control narratives, logic diagrams, and functional design documentation.
- Support commissioning, loop checks, functional testing, startup, shutdown, and turnaround activities.
- Configure, troubleshoot, calibrate, and optimize field instrumentation and process analyzers.
- Develop and maintain alarm management, control philosophies, and control system performance monitoring.
- Support cybersecurity initiatives for industrial control systems.
- Maintain a deep understanding of LNG process controls, utilities, power generation, and auxiliary systems.
- Identify opportunities to improve process stability, control performance, and operational efficiency.
- Provide technical leadership during plant trips, shutdown investigations, and root cause analyses.
- Develop instrumentation standards, maintenance strategies, and lifecycle replacement plans.
- Support contractor management and OEM technical coordination.
- Mentor instrumentation technicians and provide technical guidance across the organization.
- Promote a culture of operational excellence, automation reliability, and continuous improvement.
What you bring:
- Extensive experience supporting LNG, offshore, petrochemical, or power generation facilities.
- Expert knowledge of ABB DCS, PLCs, SIS, ESD, Fire & Gas, and process instrumentation.
- Strong understanding of IEC 61511, ISA standards, and functional safety principles.
- Experience with process analyzers, HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Modbus, and industrial communications.
- Proven experience supporting plant startups, shutdowns, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of process control strategies and advanced automation systems.
- Ability to lead complex technical troubleshooting activities.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and OEM organizations.
Work Conditions :
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, work at height above ground on stairs and catwalks, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear, smell, type and write.
- Must be able to board a ship via a gangway, climb to the top of a tank (200+ steps), scale vertical steel ladder up to forty feet or more in height and lift and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work indoors & outdoors, and be exposed to year-around weather conditions, ocean environment, and noise. There is a considerable number of outdoor activities involved.
