**Description**
To provide leadership, mentoring and direction to hourly, salaried and management personnel engaged in Environmental, Health, and/or Safety (EHS) activities related to a facility’s programs and plans. Typically manages EHS activities at a large facility or a large portion of a business unit.
**Job Duties**
Reporting to this position are various levels of EHS staff and support personnel. This position requires management of operations with significant EHS risk. Management responsibilities that add to the complexity of the job may include:
- Title V air permits
- Large wastewater operations
- Significant hazardous waste generation
- Operations with high risk to worker health and safety
- Operations requiring sophisticated health and safety programs and plans
- Coordination/Influence with government agencies and legislative process
The incumbent needs to coach and facilitate the development of the work group to develop collaborative relationships among themselves, suppliers, other cross functional groups and internal customers to insure goals are achieved. Incumbent needs a breadth of knowledge and experience including EHS regulations, programs and policies.
Though organizations will vary, incumbent will coordinate planning, organization, and implementation of EHS programs. Position requires people skills for coaching and leading people. This role requires that the incumbent increases understanding of processes and the related environmental, health and safety issues that need addressed.
Develops and directs the implementation of programs to assure management takes the actions needed to raise employee awareness of risks and to reduce, avoid, and protect employees from hazards in the workplace, including occupational illness or disease, permits and programs that are required for protection of the environment. Develops and directs programs to maintain and improve the general health of employees and/or environmental plans and programs.
Representative Activities:
- Identifies common and more complex safety/health/environmental hazards inherent in the organizations operations, and establishes guidelines for protection from those hazards.
- Investigates and implements new pollution control technologies through the work of EHS staff.
- Prepares presentations for training and communications at the facility, BU, and Corporate level as required.
- Maintains relationships with regulatory and government agency personnel.
- Investigates and establishes standards for protective equipment.
- Audits safety/health/environmental programs for compliance with company standards, government regulations, and adequacy relative to local conditions.
- Monitors periodic performance reports for trends and conditions and alerts line management to problems.
- Generating and/or reviewing of reports for environmental (EPA) and safety (OSHA) agencies.
**Requirements**:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 6 to 9 years of EHS experience
- A strong understanding of EHS regulations is essential
- Excellent human relations and communications skills are necessary.
- Advanced English
