Role Purpose
This role involves proposing, planning, coordinating, and controlling small projects affecting technical systems. With general guidelines and/or supervision, the incumbent will lead or participate in larger, more complex projects. The function requires technical and non‑technical oversight to ensure systems are technically and economically successful, and involves developing solutions and resolving complex problems with ingenuity and creativity.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide project leadership for projects, relocations, modifications, alterations, or manufacturing processes.
- Establish requirements with customers.
- Develop project plans (scope, schedule, cost estimates, acceptance criteria) for assigned responsibilities.
- Coordinate with Operating Divisions, plants, and management; lead sub‑teams to achieve results.
- Demonstrate technical leadership as an expert and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
- Participate actively in project meetings, documenting key issues, action items, and decisions.
- Engage in all phases of project methodology: initiation, planning, implementation, control, and close‑out.
- Provide periodic project updates to management.
- Co‑train and coach other engineers, sharing expertise and promoting continuous improvement.
- Advocate safety practices within the area of responsibility.
- Contribute to project critiques at completion, sharing lessons learned.
- Acknowledge and recommend sub‑team members for recognition.
- Take direct responsibility for project results with project manager oversight.
- Participate in projects that may have significant financial or strategic impact.
- Adapt to global project environments, leveraging experience with diverse cultures.
Experiences/Education – Required
- B.S. Engineering or equivalent technical degree.
- Progressive integral technical and project leadership responsibilities.
- Deep knowledge of state‑of‑the‑art engineering competencies.
- Proven ability to lead matrixed project teams and deliver documented scope on time and within budget.
- Self‑starter able to achieve objectives with minimal supervision.
- Strong team‑player skills within matrix organizations, influencing rather than controlling.
- Proficient problem‑solving and decision‑making, using quality tools (e.g., Kepner‑Tregoe, Performance Excellence).
- Basic IT skills: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of MS Project or other scheduling tools.
- Results‑oriented with high commitment level.
- Effective written and verbal communication across all levels.
- Conflict management, seeking win‑win solutions and de‑escalating issues.
Experiences/Education – Desired
- Experience across multiple businesses or technical organizations.
- Project experience focused on a single technical discipline.
- Established network within Corning’s global technical community and key external suppliers.
- External certifications (e.g., Green/Yellow/Black Belt, Lean, PMI, Professional Engineering).
- Future Project Management Certification program may apply.
