We are seeking an Engineering Manager, MAAS (Metal as a Service) to grow a distributed engineering team that delivers a cloud‑style API for provisioning, networking and storage on physical servers. The role is pivotal to expanding Canonical’s flagship data‑center product, ensuring the highest quality software and the best performance in high‑availability environments.

Responsibilities

- Lead a geographically distributed team of engineers within an agreed time zone.
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members, supporting their career progression.
- Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders.
- Participate in code and architectural reviews, maintaining high engineering standards.
- Engage with broader Canonical teams, the open‑source community and key partners.
- Travel to internal and external global events (4‑6 weeks per year).

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field.
- Proven experience delivering software in Python, Golang or an equivalent language.
- Strong background in Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
- Familiarity with cloud‑computing technologies: networking, storage,



containers and Kubernetes.
- Ability to understand and solve complex distributed‑systems problems.
- Excellent written and spoken English and presentation skills.
- Experience with agile software‑development methodologies.
- Proven track record of mentoring, developing and supporting engineering teams.
- Result‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
- Available to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks.

Nice‑to‑have Skills

- Experience with TypeScript and modern web frameworks such as React, Angular, Svelte or Vue.
- Knowledge of data‑center infrastructure management and design.
